أَستَودِعُI entrust اللَّهُGod أَطرابيmy joys وَأَترابيand my peers
Youth has passed, and people known in youth are gone.
I entrust to God my joys and my peers.
وَلَوand if عَقِلَتI had been wise لَماwould not have عَنِيَتI troubled بَعدَهُمafter them
نَفسيmy soul وَأَتعَبَتُand I wearied آرابيmy limbs بِآرابيwith my desires
And had I been wise, I would not, after them, have troubled
My soul, nor wearied my limbs with my desires.
وَكُنتُand I was فيin جانِبِa corner of الغَبراءِthe dusty earth مُعتَزِلاsecluded
عِزّيmy dignity قُنوعيmy contentment وَحِصنيand my fortress ظِلُّthe shade of مِحرابيmy prayer niche
And I lived secluded in a corner of the dusty earth,
My dignity was my contentment, and my fortress the shade of my prayer niche.
لاnot أَطلُبُI seek الرِّزقَlivelihood مِنfrom سَيفٍa sword وَلاnor قلمa pen
وَلاnor أفَكِّرُI think فيabout رومRomans وَأَعرابِand Bedouins
I seek no livelihood from sword or pen,
Nor do I think of Romans and Bedouins.
أَقولُI speak حَقّاًthe truth وَلَكِنّيbut I أُخالِفُهُI act against it
وَلَوand if عَقِلتُI had been wise لَكانَwould have been الصَّمتُsilence أَحرىmore fitting بيfor me
I speak the truth, yet I act against it;
And had I been wise, silence would have suited me better.
