هَلwill ...? تَسمَعونَyou hear شِكايَةًa complaint مِنfrom عاتِبِone who reproaches
أَوor تَقبَلونَyou accept إِنابَةًrepentance مِنfrom تائِبِone who repents
Will you hear a complaint from one who reproaches?
Or accept repentance from one who repents?
أَمor كُلَّماall that يَتلواrecites الصَّديقُthe friend عَلَيكُمُto you
فيon جانِبٍa side وَقُلوبُكُمand your hearts فيon جانِبِa side
Or is all that the friend recites to you
on one side, while your hearts are on another?
أَمّاas for الوُشاةُthe slanderers فَقَدthen indeed أَصابواthey found عِندَكُمamong you
سوقاًa market يُنَفِّقُmakes saleable كُلَّevery قَولٍword كاذِبِfalse
As for the slanderers, they have indeed found among you
a market that peddles every false word.
فَمَلَلتُمُso you grew weary مِنof صابِرٍone who is patient وَرَقَدتُمُand you slept
عَنheedless of ساهِرٍone keeping vigil وَزَهِدتُمُand you lost interest فيin راغِبِone who yearns
So you grew weary of one who was patient, and slept,
heedless of one who kept vigil, and spurned one who yearned.
وَأَقَلُّand the least ماthat which حَكَمَdecreed المِلالُweariness عَلَيكُمُagainst you
سوءَcruelty القِلىhatred وَسَماعَand listening to قَولِthe words of العائِبِthe faultfinder
And the least that weariness has decreed against you
is the cruelty of hatred and listening to the faultfinder's words.
