وَتَجَمَّلَت بِحَديثِكَ السِيَّرُ
Thoughts were ennobled by composing your praise,
Your praise has ennobled thought,
And chronicles were adorned by accounts of you.
And talk of you has adorned biography.

The traces of your generosity are not hidden;
The effects of your generosity are manifest,
Neither the sea denies them nor the rain.
Neither sea nor rain deny them.

إِن كانَتِ الأَلبابُ تَعتَبِرُ
Your good fortune in battle offers lessons,
And your forefathers’ bravery in battle is a lesson,
If minds are taking heed.
If minds would learn.
أَينَwhere الَّذينَthose who بِبُعدِهِمُthrough their remoteness أَمِنواfelt secure

وَلَرُبَّ أَمنٍ كُلُّهُ حَذَرُ
Where are those who felt secure in their remoteness?
Where are those who felt secure in their remoteness
And many a safety is wholly apprehension.
And every feeling of security was fraught with danger?

You harbored a resolve to pursue them,
You harbored a resolve against their likes
And fate sped on, racing your sword.
So fate raced ahead of your sword.

مِن جَيشٍ عَفوِكَ حينَ تَقتَدِرُ
As though its calamities feared
It was as if the vicissitudes feared your attacking army
The surge of your pardon when you have power.
When you were capable of attacking.

كَالمَوتِ لا تُبقي وَلا تَذَرُ
So a raging calamity came upon them, striking blindly,
So there came to them a crushing disaster
Like death, sparing nothing and leaving nothing.
Like death, leaving naught, annihilating all.

كُلُّeach one لَعَمرُكَby your life صارِمٌa keen sword ذَكَرُhard-steeled
كُلُّ لَعَمرُكَ صارِمٌ ذَكَرُ
It rends, while your bright blades lie sheathed;
The whites of your swords flash bare in their sheaths,
Each, by your life, a keen, hard-steeled sword.
Each and every one, by your life, a male palm-tree.

What can they do, when its slender spears have
What can they do, when amidst its twisting folds
Length, while their lifespans have brevity?
Lie length—and in their lives, shortness?

Ask Jilliq about them and what it did
Ask a seasoned warrior about them and what
To them; with Juhaynah lies the news.
It did to them, and where the news is known.

And one cast far from it, for whom is shed
And from it one tossed away bleeds freely
In every quarter blood that goes unavenged.
In every spot—blood shed wantonly.

The lands fling him about, accustomed
The lands hurl him so far
To no trail being tracked behind them.
That no trace of him remains behind them.

هَرَباً لبئسَ الوِردُ وَالصَّدَرُ
Did you settle there as a neighbor, only to leave it
You brought them as neighbors, but they fled,
In flight? Wretched indeed the coming and the going!
Miserable the lot, and the encounter!

And, to your misfortune, you withdrew from men
And you saved a band
Whose fortune ruined you, though they did not know.
Whose forebears’ nobility you never sensed.

You did indeed ask them, and they were not stingy;
Indeed you asked, and they did not stint;
And you entered their covenant; they did not betray it.
You made a pact with them—no treachery.

And, if you boast of your house, they built for it
And if you boast of the house they built for you,
A height that leaves the gaze exhausted short of it.
Sublime, at which vision falls short—

He wrested their strongholds from kings—
With it the lion leading its seekers of victory
A lion, with victory leading his quest.
Vanquished kings in their strongholds.

Upon the gray hair he cast his turban
And at every mountain pass he has a victory.
And gained victory in every defile.

He rose above the stars, so his envier thought
He ascended above the stars, so his envious foe
That heaven was descending toward him.
Thought heaven itself was falling to him.

Through him the world grew pure, though it had never been known
Through him the world was delivered, though before
Except with benefit and harm within it.
None knew it save in harm and benefit.

His reign cleared away the grit of days,
The turbidities of time vanished during his reign,
And every other clarity is marred by cloudiness.
Though all else beneath it is turbid.

His taming of its vicissitudes bore witness:
Its tribulations witnessed his competence—
Time truly stands in need of him.
Times needs must lean upon him.

It is as though his gifts had sworn
It was as if his abilities were determined
That no wish should elude a hopeful man.
Never to disappoint an expectant soul.

Amazing, one deluded when your swords’ signs
For your swords the signs and warnings!
And warnings have appeared!

One exposing his throat to your spearhead
After the frontier strongholds have suffered through them!
After throats were miserable through it!

Hope made sport of the excess of his pride,
Hope toyed with the wits of his lofty glory,
And thoughts trifled with his absent reason.
And thought sported with the tends of his mind.

And some far goals have before them a span
Of the vast span, less than which is duration
The like of which no lifetime can sustain.
Too narrow for a life to encompass.

A passing lapse deceived Uqayl,
Drowsiness deluded a rational man;
For which Time sobers up and apologizes.
The times will wake to it and apologize.

Perfection feared for your eminence because of it,
Perfection feared for your supremeness through it
And perfection is what the moon fears.
And the moon dreads perfection.

Know which horsemen they have bereaved.
What horsemen they saw and what they deemed.

Muḍar took pride! And what, pray, is Muḍar?

Their lineage suffices you as ample aid,
A theme made brief for the panegyrists.
A meaning for the praiser I abbreviate.

After my praises reached you, my poetry
My praise to you other means of approach!
Seems paltry—yet there are means other.

Leave aside the far-traveling rhymes, even if
Leave rhymed prose though it pace on,
They were stars: one would say they should hide themselves.
Were it stars, it is said to be veiled.

People who composed neither verse nor prose.
A people—they rhymed not, nor prosified.

Had there been in me and them any insight.

And how can fate be overcome?

Amr, Umar would die of slumber.
A lifetime, lifetimes would have died of grief.
