This is my letter, reporting perfect well-being

on my part, and a state summed up in brief:

worry, poverty, and a life passing away,

separation from homelands and loss of loved ones.

O my brothers—though, if I speak truly, you are

brothers of the days, not brothers of mine.

Away with the hopes I pinned

on you: they veered off the road and went astray.

Am I to be absent from Aleppo for three months,

without your writing me a single word?

So much so that it is as though I had wronged you

in a way meriting such great estrangement.

You respected neither the sanctity of letters, nor

the rights of brotherhood, nor the bond of companionship.

I can almost picture you, when you patch together

an excuse like that familiar need:

you say, ‘We were occupied by the siege, and hindered

by what came from Mu'izz al-Dawla after you left.’

Granted you spoke truly—under what ruling, then, were sent out

the merchants' letters during that repentance?

Were you unable to do what they resolved to do?

Away with whoever falls below them in resolve!

You have made conversion to Christianity appealing; so expect

after the fast, news of my baptism.

If ever I wished to flee from your company,

I would head nowhere but Constantinople.

And whenever I feel inclined, I will surely write to you

from the monastery of Armanus, in Greek.

O son of al-Muqallad, all these words

turn toward you, for you are the head of the band.

    هذي فِعالُ الشَّيخِ والِدَ مُرَّةِ

    You rallied them, then disclaimed their consequences;

these are the deeds of the old man, father of Murra.

By God, tell me: for what reason

did you turn away from my charge to you and my counsel?

Was it for the company of your intimate, whom you summoned

and assigned to serve in private?

This is not how friends deal fairly

under the rule of mutual affection and close friendship.

Be as you wish; for, after that, being near you

is the utmost of hope and the goal of desire.

As for your brother Abu al-'Ala', I

have always known his baseness in companionship.

Even when present, I would miss his asking

after me—what would he be like in my absence?

And when could he yearn, when he is forever swaying

in exhilaration and reeling in drunkenness?

And your wine-loving friend has a clear excuse

in my eyes, so I do not blame him for his coldness.

The fault is mine in what he did, for I

sought noble conduct from the merchants of Kufa.

Among the wonders is that Muhammad,

    long acquainted with al-Qadmusa,

should forget my affection, so I never cross his mind,

being occupied with that vulgar band.

O owner of the two boots, they have gone

to al-Mubariz and the sturdy youths.

You owe the carrying fee, so pay it; for there is

no dispute over this among the people of the qibla.

And by Dinar's claim upon you—for he,

if you love him, is the most solemn oath—

convey my greetings to Abu al-Hasan, and tell him:

‘This coldness is hostility toward the Shi'a.

I shall surely assail you, defiantly, for what you have done,

and spread what I suffered from you for a pointed jest.

I shall surely seat you for the case between us

    on Ashura, in al-Sharqiyya,

until I stir up from it a turmoil against you

that makes you forget the day of the Sufis' treasury.’

Leave that aside; now you, son of Muhassin, tell me—

the coldness of one like you completes the ordeal.

Your vizierate, under which you directed me,

    was like the Rahbi service.

The crow cried over it; our fellowship was scattered

by a fate in which calamities took aim and struck dead.

You had no right to grow weary of me, when

your bond with me dates only from the siege of the citadel.

Indeed, I remembered you in the mountain passes of Heraclea,

the mountains of Nicaea, and the snows of al-Himma.

And your friend the baker is busy over

his backside, with that concealed affair.

Bewildered, he seeks a place to be alone with him

    there—and that completes the ordeal.

Give my greetings to the jurist, and tell him—

he is the armament for warding off every calamity—

‘Far be it from you to describe affection and its people

while all your love remains merely potential.

What harm would it have done you to send a greeting

and write five lines on a slip of paper?

Is this how the garden grows fertile, or

the house in al-Sahliyya grows more beautiful?’

And inform Abu al-Hasan the agent, his friend,

of my gratitude for that praiseworthy affair.

I came upon a single letter from him,

dated the middle of Dhu al-Qa'da.

I found it containing mention of me, without

any news to soothe some of my burning yearning.

    A great achievement!—namely, that I am following

the paths of trade, attending to my livelihood.

I wanted from him only mention of the news

of our company, not the state of the town.

My people, why have I become a burden to you

    after that carefully guarded intention?

And I think your longing for me is like

the Jews' longing for a time of turmoil.

After leaving you, I witnessed many wonders

and saw every curious and strange thing.

And I met people beside whom Abu al-Fadl ibn

    al-Anbari falls short in baseness.

Were Christ's apostles brought together with them by

the Gospel, they would not keep them from falsehood.

I recite the hadith to them, as though I

had become one of them in the discourse of potentiality.
