ماnot ذكرspoke of الرَّوضُthe meadow وَقَدwhile already تَنَفَّساit breathed
غَيرother than حديثِthe talk of الرَّكبِthe caravan حينَwhen عَرَّساit halted for the night
The meadow, as it breathed, spoke of nothing
but the caravan’s talk when it halted for the night.
رَكبُa caravan of هَوىlove تَجاذَبواthey exchanged حَديثَهُtalk of it
فَأَترَعواso they filled to the brim مِنَwith الغَرامِardent love أَكؤساcups
Love’s riders traded tales of love,
then filled cups to the brim with passion.
وَأَسبَلواand they shed مِنَfrom الجُفونِthe eyelids أَدمُعاًtears
ظَنَنتُهاI thought them ماءwater وَكانَتbut they were أَنفُساsouls
And they let tears fall from their eyelids;
I thought them water, but they were souls.
ياO صاحِبيtwo companions of رَحليmy saddle بِجَرعاءat Jarʿāʾ (the sandy tract) الحِمىal-Ḥimā (the protected pasture)
ماnot يُعذَلُis blamed الخائِفُthe fearful man إِنif تَجَسَّساhe spies
O my two saddle-companions at Jarʿāʾ al-Ḥimā,
a fearful man is not blamed if he spies.
لَقَدindeed سَمِعتُI heard فيamong الرِّحالِthe saddles أَنَّةًa moan
أَظُنُّهاI think it نَشطَةَan outburst of وَجدٍlonging حُبِساwas pent up
Indeed, I heard a moan among the saddles;
I think it a burst of pent-up longing.
وَياand O خَليلَيَّmy two dear friends املِكاyou two, restrain طَرفَيكُماboth your gazes
لاdo not تَنظُرانِyou two look at الحَيَّthe tribe حينَwhen غَلَّساit set out before dawn
And, my two dear friends, restrain your gazes;
do not watch the tribe as it departs before dawn.
فَإِنَّfor indeed قَلبيmy heart يَومَon the day at سَفحِthe foot of حاجِرٍḤājir
يَغُرُهُbeguiles it داعيthe caller of الهَوىlove فاختَلَساthen snatched it away
For my heart, that day at the foot of Ḥājir—
love’s caller beguiled it and stole it away.
وَماand what عَلىupon قَومِكِyour people ياO ذاتَwoman with اللَّمىdusky coloring of the lips
إِنif نَحنُwe حَيَّيناwe greeted مَحَلاًa dwelling-place دَرَساhad become effaced
And what harm would it do your people, O dark-lipped one,
if we greeted a dwelling-place now effaced?
وَماand what عَلىupon زُوَّارِكُمyour visitors لَوif لَثَمواthey kissed
عَنّاon our behalf فُروعَthe branches of شيحكُمyour wormwood وَالمَغرَساand the planting-ground
And what harm would it do your visitors if they kissed
on our behalf, your wormwood’s sprigs and the ground it grows in?

رَقَّgrew gentle نَسيماًin its breeze حينَwhen طابَgrew pleasant مَلبَساas a garment
For many a night among the hills of ʿĀqil—
soft in its breeze, when pleasant as a cloak—

وَإِنَّماbut only ظَنَنتُهُI guessed at it تَفَرُّساthrough intuition
the jealous man thinks I have witnessed,
though I only guessed at it through intuition.
