O my brothers, descended from Mālik ibn Kinānah,
O my brothers of Malik ibn Kinanah,
where swords reach far through noble lineage,
Where swords gain stature through noble lineage,
لاdo not تَسأَلواask عَنّيabout me الخَيالَthe apparition فَإِنَّهُfor it
لا تَسأَلوا عَنّي الخَيالَ فَإِنَّهُ

ما زَارَني مِنكُم فَيَعلَمُ ما بي
do not ask the phantom about me, for it
Do not ask the apparition about me, for it
has never visited me from among you, to learn what ails me.
Has not come to me from you to learn what ails me.

Instead, question a night whose stars I watched:
And question a night whose stars I tended:
it stripped away my youth, though its darkness was never stripped away.
Its darkness wore away my youth, yet did not bleach it.

Its stars kept vigil with me while you remained far away;
Its stars kept vigil with me while you were far away;
you are its stars, and they are my companions.
You are its stars, and they are my companions.
