خَلِيلَيَّmy two friends بُثّاreveal, you two ماwhat أَملتdictated عَلَيكُماto you both
دُموعيmy tears فَإِنِّيfor I ماnot أُريدُI want الهَوىlove سِرّاa secret
My two friends, reveal what has been dictated to you
My two friends, I have shed my tears over you both
by my tears, for I do not want love kept secret.
For I do not desire love to remain a secret
أَصابَكُماmay it strike you both بَرحُtorment الغَرامِpassionate love لَعَلَّهُperhaps it
يُمَهِّدُmakes room ليfor me ماthe space بَينَbetween قَلبَيكُماyour two hearts عُذراan excuse
May love's torment strike you both; perhaps it
May the mornings of love afflict you both
will make room for an excuse for me between your two hearts.
That it may pave the way of excuse between your two hearts
سَقىmay water اللَّهُGod أَيّاماًdays مِنَof الدَّهرِtime لَمdid not تَشِبgrow gray
بِهِمwith them كَأَنّاas though we ماnot عَرَفناwe knew بِهاin them الدَّهراtime
May God water days of time that never grew gray
God watered days of life that were not touched
with them—as though in those days we had never known time.
By them as if we had not known life through them
وَمائِلَةِand a swaying woman الأَعطافِthe body's sides مِنfrom نَشوَةِintoxication الصِّباyouth
سَقَتنيshe gave me to drink الهَوىlove صِرفاًunmixed وَرَنَّحَهاand made her reel سُكراwith drunkenness
And a woman whose body swayed with youth's intoxication
The bending of supple waists from the intoxication of youth
gave me unmixed love to drink, and it made her reel with drunkenness.
Love made me drink it pure and its tipsiness sang
رَمَتshot at عَينُهاher eye عَينيmy eye وَراحَتand departed سَليمَةًunscathed
فَمَنso who حاكِمَa judge بَينَbetween الكَحيلَةِthe kohl-dark eye وَالعَبرىand the tearful eye
Her eye shot at mine and departed unscathed;
Her eyes shot my eyes and went safely
who, then, will judge between the kohl-dark eye and the tearful one?
So who will judge between kohl and tears?
فَياso, O طَرفُeye قَدindeed حَذَّرتُكَI warned you النَّظرَةَthe glance الَّتيthat
خَلَستَyou stole فَماyet not راقَبتَyou heeded نَهياًa prohibition وَلاnor أَمراa command
So, O eye, I warned you against the glance that
So my glancing eye, I cautioned you against the look
you stole; yet you heeded neither prohibition nor command.
That you stole - you did not observe prohibition or order
وَياand, O قَلبُheart قَدalready أَرداكَit ruined you مِنfrom قَبلُbefore مَرَّةonce
فَوَيحَكَso woe to you لَوif طاوَعتَهُyou obeyed it مَرَّةa time أُخرىanother
And, O heart, it has already ruined you once before;
And oh my heart, I protected you once before
so woe to you if you obey it once again!
Woe to you if you obey it once again
