يُقَصِّرُfalls short ماwhat ليis mine فيamid الحَوادِثِmisfortunes عَنof بَذليmy giving
فَماthen what عُذرُexcuse دَهرٍfate لاnot يَجودُgives generously عَلىto مِثليone like me
My means, amid misfortunes, fall short of my giving.
Then what excuse has fate for not giving generously to one like me?
رَمَتنيassailed me رِجالٌmen بِالوَعيدِwith threats كَأَنَّماas though
تَرومُthey seek مَراميmy goal أَوor تُنازِعُنيcontend with me for فَضليmy excellence
Men have assailed me with threats, as though
They sought my goal or vied with me for my excellence.
وَقَدand indeed أَمِنواthey are assured أَنthat يَمنَعَkeeps back السَّبَّabuse مِنfrom فَميmy mouth
فَهَلbut have? أَمِنواthey felt assured أَنthat يَمنَعَkeeps back الضَربَblows مِنfrom نَصليmy blade
And they are sure that abuse will be kept from my mouth;
But are they sure that blows will be kept from my blade?
وَيَحسَبُنيand thinks me دَهريmy fate أَرومُI seek عَطاءَهُits bounty
فَيوسِعُنيso it lavishes on me قَبلَbefore السُّؤالِthe asking مِنَof البُخلِstinginess
And my fate imagines that I seek its bounty,
So it lavishes stinginess on me before I ask.
وَهَلand would? كُنتُI was أَرضىbe content أَنto أَنالَobtain حُطامَهُits worldly scraps
وَأَعلَمُand I know أَنَّthat الحَظَّgood fortune فيهِin it مَعَwith الجَهلِignorance
And would I ever be content to gain its worldly scraps,
While knowing that good fortune there goes with ignorance?
أَنِفتُI disdained مِنَof الدُّنياthe world فَماso not طَلَبَتsought يَديmy hand
وَلاnor طَمِعَتcoveted نَفسيmy soul وَلاnor وَخَدَتtrotted swiftly إِبليmy camels
I scorned the world, so my hand never sought it,
Nor did my soul covet it, nor did my camels hasten.
وَمَنand whoever كانَwas فيin بَردِthe cloak القَناعَةِcontentment رافِلاًtrailing his robes
أَصابَfinds الغِنىwealth فيin الفَقرِpoverty وَالخِصبَand plenty فيin المَحلِdrought
And whoever walks proudly in contentment's cloak
Finds wealth in poverty and plenty in drought.
أُلامُI am blamed إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle ناوَشَassails الدَّهرُfate جانِبيmy flank
وَأَيُّand what حُسامٍkeen sword لاnot يُحادِثُis renewed بِالصَّقلِby polishing
I am blamed whenever fate assails my flank,
And what keen sword is not renewed by polishing?
وَماand not هوَit فيin ماwhat بَينَناbetween us مِنof ضَغِينَةٍrancor
بِمُطَّرِحٍone to dismiss قَوليmy words وَلاnor جاهِلignorant of فِعليmy deeds
And, despite the rancor between us, it does not
Dismiss my words, nor is it ignorant of my deeds.
وَكُنتُand I used to أمَنيgive hopes to النَّفسَthe soul بَنداًa banner مِنَof الغِنىwealth
يُحَسِّنenhances معروفيmy good deeds وَيوسِعُand broadens فيin بَذليmy giving
And I used to promise my soul a banner of wealth,
That would enhance my good deeds and broaden my giving.
فَأَمّاbut as for وَقَدand already فارَقتُI have parted from آلَthe house of عُذَيبَةٍʿUdhayba
فَلاthen no خَيرَgood فيin حزنٍrough ground مِنَof العَيشِlife أَوor سَهلِlevel ground
But now that I have parted from the house of ʿUdhayba,
There is no good in life's rough ground or level plain.
أَلاbehold إِنَّماonly وَارَيتِyou buried ياO أُمَّmother of عامِرٍʿAmir
عُهودَdays الصِّباyouth بَينَbetween الصَّفائِحِstone slabs وَالرَّملِand the sand
Ah, you have buried, O Umm ʿAmir, nothing but
The days of youth between the stone slabs and the sand.
