وَهَفوَةٍand a lapse خَطَرَتcrossed مِنّيfrom me عَلىupon باليmy mind
وَهَفوَةٍ خَطَرَت مِنّي عَلى بالي
I ask God's forgiveness for my neglect and shortcomings,
I seek God's forgiveness for my shortcomings and lapses
And for a lapse of mine that crossed my mind.
And any fleeting thoughts that crossed my mind

وَكَيفَand how يَنفَعُis useful عِلمٌknowledge بَينَamong جُهّالِthe ignorant
وَكَيفَ يَنفَعُ عِلمٌ بَينَ جُهّالِ
I spent my life in study, yet gained no favor through it;
I spent my life learning what I never mastered
And how can knowledge be useful among the ignorant?
And of what use is knowledge amongst the ignorant?
وَزادَand increased زُهدِيَmy detachment فيin أَنّيthat I عَرَفتَهُمُI knew them

فَما أَسَيتُ عَلى جاهٍ وَلا مالِ
Knowing them increased my detachment,
My asceticism increased when I came to know them
So I grieved neither for rank nor wealth.
So I don't grieve over status or wealth
قَيَّدتُI restrained بِاليَأسِwith despair عَزميmy resolve عَنfrom مُطالَبَةٍseeking

فَلتَحمَدِso let praise اللَّهَGod أَفراسيmy horses وَأَجماليand my camels
فَلتَحمَدِ اللَّهَ أَفراسي وَأَجمالي
With despair I restrained my resolve from seeking favors;
I've tied my determination against seeking
So let my horses and camels praise God.
So my steeds and camels are to be praised

I count my truest hopes as deception,
I consider my sincerest hopes as deception
When people attach themselves to my hopes.
When people cling to my hopes

Contentment has done me a favor I have thanked it for;
And I owe gratitude to contentment
And gratitude is the finest veneration and respect.
For gratitude is the best reverence and veneration

وَعِفَّةٍ بَينَ إِكثارٍ وَإِقلالِ
I paired it with wealth I had not earned,
I paired it with unearned prosperity
And with self-restraint amid abundance and scarcity.
And chastity between extravagance and scarcity

An inheritance from people spared me, after their time,
The inheritance of a people was enough for me after them
Conjecture's verdict on what is forbidden and permitted.
So interpretations of speculations on prohibited and permitted

The spring quenched a generous spring whose pouring rain
With every dark cloud, clear-skirted and pouring rain.
Falls with every smooth-tailed gray stallion

And may it single out Sinan's grave among its gifts
And it especially rained on a fleeting portion of its blessings
With cool, freely flowing water like the first-run wine.
With a cold drink like wine flowing down

وَأَغنَياني عَن شَدٍّ وَتَرحالِ
For the two helped me renounce the world through ample means,
So it has helped us to be ascetic with ease
And spared me saddling up and traveling.
And enriched me against hardship and wandering

I rested my body, and its limbs did not grow weary,
I gave my body rest so its parts wouldn't toil
Though men like me have harmed theirs through greed.
Though the likes of me had damaged it with greed

I did not make living abroad my means to riches,
And I didn't make my isolation reason to seek money
When others devoted themselves to occupations.
When people preoccupy themselves with their tasks

They spoke beautifully but rarely acted
Any of it; I confirmed my words with my deeds.
And I made my words consistent with my actions

My paternal cousin earnestly opposed me
And my cousin disagreed with my opposition
In opinion, yet found no flinching in me.
So found in me no dismissal

Be however you want, aloof or sociable
For you were created with neither paternal nor maternal uncle.
For you were created without an uncle or aunt

And spare me your quarreling or blaming
For that is needless hearsay and gossip.
For that is the excess of sayings and words

And a party the noble brought together
Through changing times and circumstances,
Despite the changing of times and states

From everyone who admits to evil, feeling no need
And one pursuing his aim, arrogant and base of nature.
And seeking the company of those with base natures

A house of plots—except that it stands tall;
A house of schemes though it's vacant
And a haunt of evil—except that it is empty.
And a place of evil though it's empty

They turned against me and their dogs startled me
But I paid no heed to the faded outline of the dung-stained campsite.
But I don't care about the pattern of fading ruins

The truth is clear: know whom you contend with,
The truth is evident so know who argues it
And leave aside the whisperings of thoughts and words.
And leave the whisperings of ideas and words

Enmity has causes, and the most apparent
And enmity has reasons, the most apparent being
Is the divergence of purposes and kinds.
In them, divergence of motives and forms

People are diverse, though shared forms encompass them;
And people vary though one image envelops them
The likeness is that between water and a mirage.
It's the compatibility between water and tools

Blessed be God! Is there any trace of goodness
Blessed is God! Is there any trace left for good
To be followed, so a successor follows a predecessor in it?
That a successor pursues where a predecessor once trod?

Atop Ghumdan was no lasting home?
Is in a scabbard whose house allows no visitors?

Or does Shapur know anything of his cities,
Or does a sword know from its mines
That he might weep over their traces and ruins?
To inspire towards ruins and vestiges?

O you who tirelessly raised the palace
Ease your efforts: it is the lofty that comes down.
Lower it upon you, for the lofty partition

I have marveled at the monks, when they were sincere
And I'm amazed by the monks, for they were true
In devotion, abstaining from slaughtering friends and children.
To asceticism, abstaining from slaughtering lambs and calves

Enough for you, of what you hoard, is your sustenance,
Your sustenance suffices you from what you store
And what shelters you—a house and a garment.
And what protects you from home and cloak

With latent desires in their mouths they ignored

If only they knew of the hunting of a lurking killer

The slaughtering knife is swifter than their torment
And the ordeal of slaughter inspired in their tongues
Of creatures crossing their path, with gentleness and delay.
Gentleness and respite for the slaughterers

Or do they believe that the living feel nothing?
Far from it! That is nothing but ignorant blundering.
Nonsense! That is but the rambling of fools

How abundant is ignorance in immorality and asceticism
And how many cause laughter with their words and deeds!
And those who laugh at words and deeds

I made my sturdy she-camel kneel, while my maxims traveled among humankind.
I withdrew into solitude and my wisdom roamed the land
So my thought roamed, while my body did not.
So my thoughts and persona remained unmoving

So how can my enviers and blamers feel safe?

And take good care of the aims and parables.
And seek the best in purposes and examples

For they are lamps not kindled for homeward travelers.
For they are lamps not locked up

And spare my praise if my personality carries me
For the crumbling dust within it gains nothing.
For there is no benefit to soil when a stream flows in it
