هَلdo تَعرِفونَyou know لَناfor us فيin قُربِكُمnearness to you رَشَداright guidance
أَوor تَعلَمونَyou know بِماfor what أَوليتُمُyou bestowed حَسَداenvy
Do you know of any good for us in nearness to you,
Do you know of any guidance for us in your nearness,
Or know of envy for what you have bestowed?
Or do you know that you have caused envy?
لاmay not أَرفأstaunch اللَّهGod دَمعاًtears فاضَoverflowed بَعدَكُمُafter you
وَلاand may not أَعادَrestore رُقاداًsleep فيكُمُon your account فُقِداwas lost
May God never staunch the tears that flowed after you,
May Allah not dry a tear that flows after you,
Nor restore the sleep lost on your account.
Nor bring back one who sleeps after losing you.
ماnot يَكفُرُdenies العَيشlife نُعماهاits bounty يُبعِدُكُمُit takes you away
عَنّاfrom us فَإِنَّfor indeed لَهاit has عِندَamong الكِرامِthe noble يَداa favor
Life's bounty is not denied, though it takes you far
The favors of life cannot make you forget us,
From us, for it has a claim upon the noble.
For with the generous, life still has power over you.
وَرَدتُI came to water مِنfrom بَرديBarada ماءَwater ماnot نَقَعتُI quenched بِهِwith it
مِنَfrom الصَّبابَةِardent longing قَلباًa heart عَنكُمُtoward you بُرَداgrew cold
I came to Barada's water, but could not quench with it
I poured from my flask water I did not dip
My heart's longing, or make it grow cold toward you.
Into it a heart cooled off from your separation.
وَصارَand became كُلُّevery قَبيحٍugly thing فيكُمُin you حَسَناًbeautiful
لَمّاsince أَفادَit gave عَلىin facing هِجرانِكُمyour desertion جَلَداfortitude
And every ugly thing in you became beautiful,
All that is ugly in you has become beautiful
Since it gave me fortitude to bear your desertion.
When it was graced with your abandonment and patience.
لَوif كُنتُI were مِثلُكُمlike you جازَيتُI would repay فِعلَكُمُyour conduct
فَماthen not أَطَلتُI extended لِساناًa tongue دونَكُمin your defense وَيَداand a hand
If I were like you, I would repay your conduct,
If I were like you I would reciprocate your actions,
And would not extend tongue or hand in your defense.
But I did not loosen a tongue or hand against you.
وَكانَand would be أَيسَرُthe easiest ماwhat عِنديin my power لِغَدرِكُمُfor your betrayal
أَنthat لاnot أَعودَI return إِلىto ناديكُمُyour gathering أَبَداever
And my least response to your betrayal would be
The easiest thing for me regarding your betrayal
Never to return to your gathering.
Is never to return to your circle ever again.
فَإِنso if وَجَدتُمyou found كَماjust as أَوجَدتُمyou provided بَدَلاًa replacement
فَليَرضَthen let him be content كُلُّevery امرئٍperson مِنّاof us بِماwith what وَجَداhe found
So if you have found a replacement, as you have provided one,
So if you find, as you have found, a replacement,
Then let each of us be content with what he has found.
Then let each of us be content with what he found.
وَماand not أَلومُكُمُI blame you أَنthat تَبلُغواyou reach حَلَباًAleppo
بِأَنَّناbecause we قَدalready رَضيناwe have accepted جلَّقاًJilliq بَلَداas a home
Nor do I blame you for reaching Aleppo,
I cannot blame you for seeking deeper waters
Since we have accepted Jilliq as our home.
When we were content with stagnant backwater.
وَقَدand indeed تَعَلَّمتُI have learned سوءَill الظَّنِّopinion عِندَكُمُin your company
فَماso not أُؤمِّلُI place hope in يَوماًever بَعدَكُمafter you أَحَداanyone
And I have learned mistrust in your company,
From you I learned the evils of suspicion,
So after you I shall never place my hopes in anyone.
So I no longer hope for union after you.
