She descended to you from the loftiest abode,

A gray dove, proud and unapproachable.

    Veiled from every knowing eye,

Yet she bared her face and wore no veil.

She came to you unwillingly, and perhaps

She loathed parting from you, filled with grief.

She felt disdain, not familiarity; but when she joined you,

She grew used to dwelling beside the barren ruin.

And I think she forgot past days in the sanctuary,

And dwellings she had not been content to leave.

Until, when she became joined to the hāʾ of her descent,

In the mīm of her center, at Dhāt al-Ajraʿ,

The thāʾ of 'the heavy' clung to her, and she found herself

Among landmarks and ruins bowed low.

She weeps when she recalls dwelling in the sanctuary,

With tears that pour and have not yet ceased.

And she keeps shedding tears over the ruins [probable reading] that

Were effaced by the recurring four winds.

For the dense snare hindered her, and she was barred

By a cage from the height with its spacious quarters.

Until, when the journey drew near the sanctuary,

And departure for the wider expanse approached,

And she became [probable reading] parted from each thing left

Behind her—a companion of the dust, unescorted.

She cooed; the veil had been lifted, and she saw

    What sleeping eyes cannot perceive.

And she began to warble above a towering peak,

And knowledge raises all who have not been raised.

Then why was she brought down from a towering height,

Lofty, to the bottom of the lowest depths?

If God sent her for some wise purpose,

Concealed from the peerless, discerning, brilliant mind,

Then, if her descent was an unavoidable necessity,

So that she might hear what she had not heard,

And return knowing every hidden thing

In the two worlds—her rent has not been mended.

And she is the one whose path time cut short,

Until she indeed set at the very point of rising.

As though she were lightning that flashed in the sanctuary,

Then vanished, as though it had never shone.

Kindly give an answer to what I inquire

About—for the fire of knowledge shines with radiance.
