هذّب النفس بالعلوم لترقى

هذّب النفس بالعلوم لترقى

وخذ الكل فهي للكلّ بيت

وخذ الكل فهي للكلّ بيت

Refine the soul through the sciences, that it may ascend.

And take them all, for it is a home for all.

إنما النفس كالزجاجة والعل

إنما النفس كالزجاجة والعل

م ضياء وحكمة الله زيت

م ضياء وحكمة الله زيت

The soul is but like a glass vessel, and knowledge

is light, and God's wisdom is oil.

فإذا أشرقت فإنك حىّ

فإذا أشرقت فإنك حىّ

وإذا أظلمت فإنك ميت

وإذا أظلمت فإنك ميت

So when it shines, you are alive;

And when it darkens, you are dead.
