لقد طفت في تلك المعاهد كلها

لقد طفت في تلك المعاهد كلها

وسرحت طرفاً بين تلك المعالم

وسرحت طرفاً بين تلك المعالم

Indeed, I wandered through all those places of learning,

I roamed through all those institutes,

and let my gaze roam among those landmarks.

And let my eyes wander amongst those landmarks.

فلم أر إلا واضعاً كف حائر

فلم أر إلا واضعاً كف حائر

على ذقن أو قارعا سن نادم

على ذقن أو قارعا سن نادم

But I saw only a bewildered man resting his palm

Yet I saw none but those who placed

on his chin, or a remorseful man striking his tooth.

A bewildered hand on their chin, or gnashed their teeth in regret.
