أكاد أجنّ ممّا قد أجنّ

فلم ير ما أرى انس وجنّ

I nearly go mad from what I keep concealed.

I almost go mad from what has driven me mad

For neither humans nor jinn have seen what I see.

Yet no human or jinn has seen what I see

رميت من الخطوب بمصيات

رميت من الخطوب بمصيات

نوافذ لا يقوم لها مجنّ

نوافذ لا يقوم لها مجنّ

Calamities have struck me with [deadly shafts],

I have been struck by misfortunes with deadly blows

Piercing ones that no shield can withstand.

Like windows with no protector to mend them

وجاورنى أناس لو أريدوا

وجاورنى أناس لو أريدوا

على منفت ما أكلوه ضنوا

على منفت ما أكلوه ضنوا

And my neighbors are people who, if asked

And I live among people who if they desired

For crumbs of what they had eaten, would begrudge them.

To eat my cooked meat would begrudge me it

فإن عنّت مسائل مشكلات

فإن عنّت مسائل مشكلات

أجال سهامهم حدس وظنوا

أجال سهامهم حدس وظنوا

So if difficult questions arise,

So if intricate questions make things difficult

A hunch sets their arrows turning, and they guess.

They shoot their guesses and conjectures at me

وإن عرضت خطوب معضلات

وإن عرضت خطوب معضلات

تواروا واستكانوا واستكنوا

تواروا واستكانوا واستكنوا

And if intractable calamities arise,

And if complex misfortunes present themselves

They hide from sight, grow meek, and take cover.

They hide away, withdraw, and conceal themselves
