The death-announcers told me what Death had done

to Asma—one of its heinous deeds.

So I disbelieved what they said, though it was true.

O best of the mourned, and worst of death-announcers!

Through Asma, calamities turned their dealings cruel

toward us, making us forget their former kindnesses.

The dust enfolded in its bosom a secret from her

of glory—and secrets belong to souls.

And from her bounty it made the thirsty soil a garden,

bringing forth flowers of praise—what splendid growth!

    وَإِلّا سَقاها سائِلُ العَبَراتِ

    May rain water her—the honor in that is rain's;

    and if not, may flowing tears water her;

and if not, may her bounty water her in her tomb,

for it was like rain in times of hardship.

And they said, 'An old woman.' I said, 'Many a good deed

makes her surpass young women in beauty.'

She went ahead, and all follow her path,

    escorted by righteousness and prayers.

It pained the soul that her place was not empty of her,

and she was not like decaying bones.

    Yet she left many branches,

a life for her beyond every death:

such as Abu Bakr, and such as his descendant,

my friend Abu Ishaq, the best of my peers.

    فَقَد فَعَلَتها أَعظَمَ الفَعَلاتِ

    By the life of Death, it will win no other like her;

for in this it has done the greatest of deeds.

The sky of honor gave way and split asunder for her,

and the stars of glory grew dim.

And grief for her spent the night disturbing my bed,

and denying my eyelids sweet slumber.

So tell Death: 'You have wronged our nobles—

wrongs that, I think, would draw reprisals from them.

Had you been a person, you would not have dared assail them,

and would have spared them out of awe and for their gifts.'

    فَفي الصَبرِ أَعوانٌ عَلى الحَسَراتِ

    My two friends from the heights of Murad, be patient;

for in patience there are allies against sorrow.

And restrain the streaming tears, for

a young man's tears are reserved for the dwelling-grounds.

Ah, many a one you weep for laughs with joy,

while you are ever grieving over him.

For you will encounter joy and sorrow,

and what is to come will inevitably come.
