O lightning, flash between Marwa and Safa!
O lightning, flash between Marwah and Safa
At dawn, water with pilgrimage a faith that has faded.
Early, to give drink to the pilgrims whose faith has worn out
وَاِهدِand guide الحَجيجَthe pilgrims إِلىto مَعالِمِthe landmarks of مَكَّةٍMecca

فَلَقَد تَرَكتَهُمُ حَيارى وُقَّفا
And guide the pilgrims to Mecca's landmarks,
And guide the pilgrims to the landmarks of Mecca
For you have left them bewildered, standing still.
For you have left them confused and halted

And sprinkle trembling hearts with its fragrance.
And sprinkle with its sand the shuddering hearts

And line my eyelids with its blowing wind
I guard its soil too jealously to let it be blown away.
I yearn for its soil should it be swept away

From al-Hajun to al-Hatim, Ahmad left
Between Al-Hujun and Al-Hatim for Ahmad
A trace through which the soil grew pure and honored.
There is a radiant trace, and the soil is honored

At Mina, at its Jamra, and on to its Arafat—
With his embers at Mina reaching Arafat
What a course and station for the Prophet!
Beyond, a place for the Prophet to stand

And at the Hijr and the jet-black Stone shone
The Black Stone and the Red Stone gleamed
His lights; guidance would not let them be eclipsed.
Its lights refused to be eclipsed

And Maqam Ibrahim calls upon his Lord
His feet have left their marks in solid rock.
His feet marked the mount where disciples stood

The House of the Curtains, its corner caressed
By gray doves, seeking refuge and showing affection.
By the wings of doves, pleading and compassionate

Oh, would that I were a dove within its shelter!
Would that I were among its particles a dove
I would forsake idle cooing and weep for the Chosen One.
Ceasing my warbles, weeping for Al-Mustafa

O eye, weep for Al-Dafeen in Taybah
And for a head's parting enwrapped in the Successor's blood.
And for one massacred, wrapped in his own blood

Two brothers, the best of them in Harrah of Yathrib
Lies at rest, while the other remained behind in Iraq.
Laid down, while the other left behind in Iraq

The swordsman’s right hand was paralyzed though he
Left the Imam upon the brink.
Abandoned the Imam fearful of the sword

Umayya showed malicious joy over the Successor.
The Gloaters rejoiced not in slaying the successor
May the Successor's killing bring her no joy, nor him misery.
Nor did his death alleviate their misery

Umayya wished that he had been struck by her sword.
Umayyah wished that his sword would strike
A burning coal is enough for you, Umayya—if it could suffice.
A live coal, O Umayyah, would have sufficed!

Has killing him healed you of the day of Badr?
Their cure from the day of Badr when he killed them
That is martyrdom; there is no obscurity in that.
That martyrdom which cannot obscure or fade

And I weep for the two grandsons after their father
Out of love for their grandfather, the merciful, most compassionate.
Out of love for their grandfather, gentle and kind

By my life, error indeed oppressed guidance
My, how misguidance prevailed over guidance
At al-Taff, in killing Husayn, and gave short measure.
In slaughtering al-Husayn, little care or hesitation!

Alas for an accident, if only it could be avoided
Alas for such an error, if it were to be followed!
Alas for an error, if only it could be corrected

Better she left the hyenas high-pitched, fragmented
Shattered, and the spears splintered!
And the wolf packs to roam about and waver

So upon Quraysh, after Hashim, settle the dust!

Of her murderous assaults on them were beyond description!
From their violence which continues to be portrayed

Had a falcon been in Umayya's place,
If, instead of Umayya, there was an eagle
Flesh-hungry though it was, it would have circled over Husayn and fluttered.
That swooped down to feed on al-Husayn and fluttered about

Or a [lion?] in her place the day he fell,
Or a female wolf, when it appeared in her place
Hungry, it would have made Husayn a bed and shown him kindness.
It would gently console al-Husayn and treat him kindly

[Had] a flock of sandgrouse, the morning he complained of thirst,
Lo, a flock of wild ducks passed by, so the echo complained
Come to him, it would have disgorged for his drinking what it had fetched.
And the flow of water ceased, no more to gush forth
إِنّيindeed I لَأَشرَقُtruly choke بِالزُلالِon clear water تَذَكُّراًin remembrance

I choke on clear water when remembering
Verily, I rise joyful, remembering them
Them, and grow restless amid bliss, in grief.
And remain restless, enjoying the pleasures

I wish I knew how it was atop the staff
Husayn's head came to be, and how his light went out!
The head of al-Husayn and his light, how they wavered

Or how could a rod strike a front tooth
Or how the switch separated a part of him
That had been the Prophet's delight and a place for his kisses?
That was a comfort spot for the Prophet and sanctuary

If they raise Hasan's head, before it
If they raise the head of al-Husayn, they raised
They raised the Qur'an, seeking refuge from [his father?].
A burning torch from the covers of the Book

Enough of talk about my heart, for it
Alas! A narration that perturbed my heart
Remembered the Messenger and his family, and yearned.
It mentioned the Messenger and his family, so I yearned

Why was I enraptured [at their mention?], as though I
Why did I get agitated at the mention of their enemies?
Had quaffed wine from the remembrance of the beloved?
It was as if I had been bitten by a hot blazing coal

Perform prayers upon the Prophet, for it
Leaves towering sins a smooth, level plain.
Sweeps away grave sins, removing them completely

O Lord, I have indeed found solace in loving them;
O Lord, I have been accustomed to loving them
So make them my means of turning away from all besides him.
So make that, apart from anything else, my preoccupation
