Your good fortunes refuted what the astrologer claimed,

and proved him false in what he used to assert.

He heralds the barren wind, yet it,

as he said, is barren—through you, barren of what he foretold.

He swears that the event must surely come to pass,

and by the outcome you have made him forsworn even as he swears.

Your presence safeguards existence from what

he reports about the wind, or the star decrees.

It is said that the stars' decrees rule humankind,

yet you rule over their decrees.

In love they have never ceased wishing that they might

fall into your assembly or kiss your dust.

    تُشِيرُ إِليها من بعيدٍ فَتَفْهَم

    You are who you are, and they are what they are in their heaven;

you signal to them from afar, so they understand.

Among them a scorpion stings whoever opposes you,

and among them a lion mauls whoever rivals you.

They bend for you the Bow among their zodiac signs,

and with it you shoot your enemies; the meteors are arrows.

If you wished, they would be among your gifts; for

to you the sun is only a dinar, the full moon a dirham.

They gathered only to compose a poem,

and you are the one who taught us how to compose.

We congratulate you on the honored month, Rajab; it

is honored among us, true to its name, and revered.

And on your recovery after the glad tidings; it

is a recovery for your body after which it will never sicken.

We testify that the month is a blessed month

    for you, and that your recovery is complete;

and that you are crowned with their crescent,

    and that you wear their Pleiades as a ring;

and that in both states you rise and ascend,

    and that in both states you endure and remain safe;

and that in adversity you are feared and avoided,

and that in prosperity you give and bestow favors.

So fate does not seal what you undo,

nor does fate undo what you seal.

Time's tent-ropes are dismantled for departure,

yet your kingdom stays encamped after time itself.

The earth's scroll is rolled up before your kingdom is folded away,

and the world crumbles, while your kingdom does not.

Away with the worshippers of stars! Have they not learned

that you are mightier and more able to sustain humankind?

They served the celestial spheres only because they

run at your command or serve your will.

Earth's kings desired your good fortune and longed

to learn it; but good fortune cannot be learned.

You took possession of the kings' realms, merely because

you kept vigil while the kings of those realms slept.

The kings truly took possession of them, only

to surrender to your army all they had received of them.

You rose upon them with a dawn of sword-blades,

surrounded by a dark night of dust.

Evil was the morning of those forewarned, for it was

a morning whose stars were the blue spearheads.

And an army whose lions of battle are enraged,

or, if you wish, circling eagles of death.

They abstain from taking booty in battle,

for their only spoils are horsemen.

When they fight, they are silent out of courage,

but their blades speak in throats.

Through their boldness they attained life; and sometimes

    advancing delays men's appointed deaths.

    وأَنت الذي فَهَّمتَهمْ فتَفهموا

    You refined them, and they became refined;

you taught them understanding, and they understood.

On the day of battle, through you they charged,

and on the day of battle, through you their enemies drew back.

With them you struck a people asleep in ignorance,

so there was no sleeper whom blood did not awaken.

You grew used to raiding the lands of unbelief, so now

your steed whinnies whenever it comes to them.

If ever a rebel rebels against you, then

your steed's hoof brands him between the eyes.

Champions are led to you before you meet them,

for the dust of your army has already blinded them.

The unbelievers' fortresses do not protect them from you,

and nothing but you, after God, grants protection.

You launched raids there until even its plants

and grasses, red with blood, became dragon's-blood dye.

How many a Nasiri Friday prayer has been held

there, with the vast army as its worshippers!

How many a church has become a congregational mosque,

and how many an unbeliever there has become a Muslim!

Every place where you are is blessed,

and every day there is a feast and a festive gathering.

The regions grew jealous over you: one

weeps at your distance, or smiles at your nearness.

There is no doubt that lands, like their people,

as has been said, suffer and prosper with time.

Banas jealously rivals the Nile for you,

and al-Muqattam envies Lebanon for having you.

Egypt has always had a greater claim to Yusuf

than Syria; but shares of fortune are allotted.

Many a handsome one is unloved, while his opposite

has his eye, cheek, and mouth kissed.

It is fortune: accept it unquestioningly, if you wish,

and seek no explanation, for the matter is obscure.

    كلانا مُعَنًّى بالأَحبَّة مُغْرَمُ

    In Egypt, as in me, are heartache and longing;

both of us are tormented, enamored of our beloveds.

A veiled beloved has raided my heart,

and a turbaned beloved was made arbiter of my death.

My only slayers are cheek-down and a cheek,

and my only robbers are a bracelet and a wrist.

I am tender toward a cheek whose owner is not tender toward me,

and pity a waist whose owner shows no pity.

So, O Nasir al-Din, through whose sword

and overflowing bounty the love-stricken find solace,

for your praise I deferred the love prelude, out of awe,

though they hold that the love prelude should come first.
