Your glance spares you the need to draw the keen-edged sword,

And your stature spares you the need to brandish the dusky spear.

So lay aside the Indian sword and straightened spear in war

And peace, and slay mortals with your charms.

You adorned your brow with hair; never had we seen

A moonlit night after dawn before.

And your face seems a paradise, never adorned

Without setting a Kawthar flowing from my tears.

O you who warn me with reproach, I do not—while his cheek

    Is like Nuʿman's anemones—fear the warner, al-Mundhir.

I would give my life for him whom I saw as he swayed

And gazed at me, humbly and haughtily.

Ask him: in his curves he is ʿAbla,

Yet in battle he resembles ʿAntar.

Thus, through his supple flanks and his heart's hardness,

He has won beauty both feminine and masculine.

    قد صَار دمعي في هَواه كُثيِّراً

    In recalling beauty, I forget ʿAzza's radiant brow;

My tears, for love of him, have become Kuthayyir.

He came, and for the thirsty there was a black sea

That filled the expanse with jewels of stars.

And spring had spread across the earth's domain,

With dew from her clouds, a green mantle.

And the great trees trail each fruit-bearing bough

Of theirs—a lute whenever the doves sing.
