You have brought Judgment Day upon your lovers,

with a rose for a cheek and a branch for a figure.

So how can one escape the rose of your cheek,

and how find safety from the branch of your figure?

I marveled when humankind died for you,

while in your beauty you are the abode of eternal life.

    وتَهْنيكِ تَهْنيك مَنِّي الكَرَامة

    The humiliation you give me delighted me in my bliss;

and may the honor I give you delight you—delight you.

I forfeited my heart in this passion,

and to me that forfeiture is like profit.

And my heart said, 'May I never lack love!'

So I told it, 'May you never lack reproach!'

My eyelids lavish water for your sake,

as though my eyelids were the palm of Ibn Mamah.

O my slayer, I have given thanks for death,

and, O my oppressor, I have given thanks for injustice.

You have become heir apparent to the full moons,

and they have named you to inherit the imamate.

The fine lines of your cheek are the writing on the charter

of succession, and the mole upon it is the signature.

And you were so generous that you bestowed languor as a robe—

without its leaving you—upon the gazelle of Ramah.

And the mole so bewildered me that I could not gaze

at its beauty, though it is a beauty spot on the cheek.

    وماجت نَقاً وتمشت غمامهْ

    She appeared as a moon and gazed like a wild cow's calf;

and she swayed like a sand dune and walked like a cloud.

And they said, 'We see you have fallen in love with the veil.'

So I said, 'Yes, and I no longer love the turban.'
