Yes, this is the abode of bliss granted now,

Reminding me of the abode of bliss deferred.

So I revel in both abodes at one time,

With my eye and the twin eyes of my thought and imagination.

Come, sit here, you two, rejoicing in it, and do not say:

“Halt, let us weep at the memory of a beloved and a home.”

And, by God, do not pass by the palace after this,

For no solace lies in an effaced trace.

Every garden has indeed fallen short of its reach,

And every man of excellence falls short of its kings.

Through it, he effaced among mankind the memory of Ja‘far of al-Ra-

    shid—then where is Ja‘far al-Mutawakkil?

A guest there seems to be a guest of Hatim,

Just as a neighbor there is a neighbor of al-Samaw’al.

A sky of gold, beneath it an earth of silver,

Rosewater branches through it along a channel.

At the front, its cascade is a playful eyelid

    Of a she-sprite—traces of a phantom and a flank.

And how many a bird has water flying from its head,

Although in its nest it is like one in chains!

And how many a lion has water leaping from its mouth,

Though it has neither risen nor stirred!

The kings of the earth were brought back there to learn

That what they built was imperfect.

    Kisra faces Caesar, and both

    Turn an astonished, contemplative gaze.

So Kisra sees the iwan as a mere fragment, and Caesar

Sees the palace as a devout hermit’s hut.

And throughout it is portrayed every lover

Who deems love a duty in the revealed Book:

Jamil of Buthayn, with Kuthayyir of ‘Azza,

The two composing verses of passion and courtship.

Troops have been paraded there: a host

In whose tracks a thousand hosts pass.

As though they were on a feast day, for their tunics

Are of brocade, not the iron tunics one wears.

And gardens have ripened there—how much there is

For a fruit-picker, from every low-hanging date cluster!

They are distant, but only from a gatherer’s hand,

And near, but only to a beholder’s eye.

Thus it shows mankind a later one’s superiority,

Just as it shows them an earlier one’s undoing.
