Yes, she is Su'da, and for me an auspicious moon.
Yes, my happiness is her and she is my moon of bliss
Union without rejection, nearness without distance.
Union, no rejection, nearness, no distance

She did not betray, did not break her word, did not pretend
another beauty—not every beautiful woman is Hind.
To be a singing girl, not every singing girl is lovely

The necklace embraces her without me
How strange, my people—why should the necklace clasp together?
How strange, O people, that the necklace should meet

She is the bough, but one made wholly of roses.
She is the branch except that she is all rose

he would not have doubted that it was the indivisible atom.
He would not doubt it was the unique gem

My love settled in that mouth and did not cease
supplies from my heart have stood at that mouth's gate.
To flow from my heart to the door of that mouth

Yazid ibn al-Mufarragh's Burd is empty,
The poetry of Yazid ibn al-Mufarrag is empty
while she is the one whose beauty fills the mantle.
And that one whose beauty filled poetry

She walked to me, the beautiful one, with her beauty
lowland and highland—a navel with a breast above it.
So it was beautiful mountains and valleys above her, a breast

On her mouth is a beauty spot free of blemish
Not every beauty-mark makes its dwelling on the cheek.
Not every spot free from blemish adorns the cheek

A messenger of musk, whose fragrance her mouth has copied;
A messenger of musk marked her mouth with its fragrance
within it musk grows stronger, and nadd is employed.
And through it musk increases, ambergris is sought

A night whose hair clothed it in the color of its darkness
its light is not hidden, and its stars do not appear.
So its light does not fade and its stars do not appear

I saw the sun return because of her so believe
in my love: this is a miracle that admits no denial.
In my love, for this is a miracle that has no refutation

Like your hair so that it is just like it, curly

a necklace from me had caught in its braids.
From me a necklace clung to its curls

I wept for a parting not yet come, and an abandonment
I wept for separation that had not come and for separation
yet to come, and another whose time has not yet arrived.
That would come, and its time had not come yet

Inevitably separation will come between us
for it can never do without coming between us.
For between us it can never have a substitute

The nights' fidelity is to betray; their pledge,
It is the loyal way of nights to betray and their pact
as they are known, is that no pledge of theirs endures.
To break as they were expected not to break their word

My time assailed me with afflictions and harm.
My time has harmed me with troubles and injuries
This base age has always harmed the freeborn.
And that despicable time did not cease harming the free man

It is no wonder I said I am a sword
many a blade is not forged in India.
For many a sword was not forged in India

I desire; with God, a promise is never broken.
I want, and with God no promise is broken

A young man's exertion is to complain of the nights and blame them;
The efforts of the youth are to complain of nights and blame them
and this, by my life, is the effort of one without strength.
And this, by my life, is the effort of one who has no effort

A young man's good fortune is to praise the most exalted and extol him,
And the youth’s bliss is to praise fate and thank it
though he transcends all that praise and gratitude can say.
Even if praise and thanks fall short of what he said

What can praisers say when their praises
their praises are an ebb, and his beneficence a flood?
Are scant and their bounty is an ebb

His are unassailable might and enduring lineage.

His excellence exhausts any attempt to count it.
To him belongs virtue that number cannot encompass

Glory is truly his by brotherhood: indeed,
To him belongs glory in truth through brotherhood
his twin, Glory, traces its lineage to Ibn Abi al-Majd.
The progeny of the father of glory are affiliated with its essence

Time is his slave and has never disobeyed his command.
Time is his servant, it has never disobeyed his command
How many a master has had his command disobeyed by his slave!
And oh Lord, what servant did not obey his master's command

His is a wonder: while creation perishes, he endures forever.
He has a sign and creation is transient
Do they not know that praise is immortality?
Did they not know that praise is eternity

His is a wonder: majesty beyond all bounds,
He has a sign that has no limit in majesty
and splendor—not everything has a limit.
And glory, not everything has a limit

A ruler but destiny is his army

We will live to come to him in deputations
The lodging is indeed [unclear], and the water has grown sweet.
How long the abode seemed and the roses were tortured

The least of what he gives their delegation is guidance;
The easiest gifts to present to their delegation is guidance
the least that sends their nobles forth by night is earnest effort.
And the easiest manner for their caravans is seriousness

Then prosperity sprouted from him and his opinions

once he is among them, they neither reiterate nor put forth a word.
For if it existed in them, they would not renew or initiate

Out of fear of him time seeks forgiveness for its sin
at his might, the tawny lion becomes wolf-like.
And out of dread of him the lion becomes a tender gazelle

Through him the crooked becomes straight after their saying
'When will it straighten? Can bitter sap and honey be equal?'
When will it be straight, can poison and honey be equal?

The matter is easy for him though the matter is difficult
From him Time draws brightness, though Time is foaming.
And from him the time gleams though time is gloomy

Opposites have come together in him as an honor:
Opposites are united in him out of generosity
this world and the hereafter, ministry and asceticism.
So this world and the next and rule and asceticism

he sees its dominion as a jest, so earnestness masters him.
Seeing its possession as jest so seriousness possesses it

I saw the stars dimmed by the light of his face
most of them blind, and the rest sore-eyed.
So most of them are blind and the rest bleary

His promise is no lightning and his bounty no thunder

those gifts never let a saddle-felt dry.
So those gifts will never dry for him

What newborn does not have your generosity as his cradle?
And which infant did you not call to his cradle?

Then in my hearing is fire and in my liver is cold

وربَّand many a أَسيرٍprisoner ليسnot فيaround عُنْقِهhis neck القيْدُthe fetter
Every one of them is a prisoner of gloom;
None of them but a prisoner of gloom
many a prisoner has no fetter around his neck.
And how many prisoners have no chains on their necks
يموتُونthey die غيظاًof rage كلَّماwhenever عشتُI live غِبْطةًin bliss
فقدfor indeed ضمَّنِيhas sheltered me قصْرٌa palace وقدand indeed ضمَّهمhas sheltered them لحْدُa grave
They die of rage whenever I live in bliss:
They die of rage whenever I live in joy
a palace has sheltered me, while a grave has sheltered them.
For I am embraced by a palace and they by a grave
بنقصِهمُthrough their shortcomings قّدْindeed بانbecame clear فضْليmy excellence ورُبَّماand perhaps
شكرتُهمُI thanked them والضِّدُّand the opposite يُظهرُهreveals it الضِّدُّthe opposite
Through their shortcomings my excellence has become clear; perhaps
Through their deficiency my merit appeared and sometimes
I have thanked them—one opposite reveals the other.
I thanked them, for opposite reveals opposite

ولابُدَّand inevitably ببورقاءِa gray dove (irregular form) بالطَّبعِby nature أَنْto تشْدوsing
My praise stayed away awhile in awe, then visited him.
My praise distanced awe then it visited him
A gray dove must, by nature, sing.
And it must, the nightingale sings by nature

It withdraws coyly, so that its visit may be sweeter;
It wards off visitors so that his dwelling may be pleasant
the sweetest union is one preceded by rejection.
And the sweetest union was estrangement before it
ولمَّاand when التقيْناwe met كانthere was فيناbetween us تجاذُبٌa tug
كماas يلْتقيmeet فيin المقْلةِthe eye النَّومُsleep والسُّهدُand sleeplessness
When we met, there was a tug between us,
When we met there was pulling between us
as sleep and sleeplessness meet within the eye.
As sleep and wakefulness meet in the eyelid

Had they been wise, they would have accepted what was decreed
If they were rightly guided they would approve what
by God; but sound judgment is sometimes hidden.
God ordained but perhaps wisdom is hidden
وإِنيand indeed I لفِيam surely in شُغْلٍpreoccupation بنعْماكwith your favors عنْهُمaway from them
فلاso let not يشْتغِلْconcern himself بيwith me لاneither سعيدٌSa'id ولاnor سْعدُSa'd
Your favors keep me too occupied to attend to them;
I am busy with your blessings from them
let neither Sa'id nor Sa'd concern himself with me.
So neither happy nor blessed busies himself with me
حَسودِيmy envier بكthrough you الحيرانُbewildered حاليmy state بِكthrough you الرِّضاcontentment
زمانِيmy time بكthrough you النَّشوانُintoxicated عيْشِيmy life بكthrough you الرَّغْدُease
Through you my envier is bewildered; through you my state is contentment.
My enviers confused through you, my state pleased through you
Through you my time is intoxicated; through you my life is ease.
My time joyous through you, my life comfortable through you
ومالِيand I have not علىto أَلاَّnot أُحبَّكlove you قدرةٌthe power
ومِنْكand from you دمِيmy blood واللَّحمُand flesh والعظْمُand bone والجِلْدُand skin
I have no power not to love you:
I have no power but to love you
from you are my blood, flesh, bone, and skin.
My blood, flesh, bone and skin are from you
جهلتُI knew nothing of ملوكَthe kings الأَرْضِof the earth لمَّاwhen عرفْتُهI knew him
فماso there is not لِيfor me إِليْهمtoward them لاneither قصيدٌa poem ولاnor قصْدُa purpose
I knew nothing of the kings of the earth once I knew him;
I was ignorant of earth's kings when I knew him
so I have for them neither poem nor purpose.
So I have for them neither ode nor purpose
