قدalready كانhappened ماwhat كانhappened منof جَهْلِيmy ignorance وطغيَانِيand my transgression
وجاءَand came ماwhat جاءَcame منof نُسْكِيmy devotion وإِيمَانيand my faith
What came of my ignorance and transgression has come to pass,
The ignorance and tyranny I once possessed
and what came of my devotion and faith has come.
And the piety and faith that later progressed
وسُرَّand was gladdened منfrom بَعْدِafter غمِّthe sorrow of النفسِthe soul مَلكيmy angel
واغتمّand grieved بعدafter سرورthe joy of النفسthe soul شَيطَانِيmy devil
My angel rejoiced after the soul's sorrow,
My kingdom rejoiced after the soul's grief
and my devil grieved after the soul's joy.
And my devil grieved after the soul's relief
فماso not المعمَّمُthe turbaned one بعدafter النُّسْكِdevotion مِنْof أَرَبِيmy desire
ولاnor المُقَنَّعthe veiled one بعدafter الزُّهدrenunciation مِنْof شانيmy concern
So, after devotion, the turbaned one is no object of my desire,
The scholar is no nobler after his knowledge
nor, after renunciation, is the veiled one my concern.
Nor the ascetic greater after his abandon.
نَسيتُI forgot إِلفاًa beloved بَخِيلاًmiserly لَيْسَdoes not يَذْكُرُنيremember me

I forgot a miserly beloved who does not remember me,
I forgot a miserly companion who won't remember me
by remembering a generous Lord who does not forget me.
With the mention of a Kind Lord who won't forget me
وخِفْتُand I feared عِصْيانَdisobeying منHim who لوif شاءَHe willed أَهْلَكَنيHe would destroy me

I feared disobeying Him who, if He willed, would destroy me,
And I feared disobeying One who if He willed could destroy me
and chose obedience to Him who, if He willed, would create me.
And I chose obeying One who if He willed could honor me
وعِفْتُand I spurned دُنْيَاa world تُسَمَّىis called منbecause of دَنَاءَتهاits baseness

I spurned a world that, for its baseness, is called
I shunned a world called base for its lowness
'lowly'; otherwise, what affliction in it is close at hand?
Else it has no despised aspect for the lowly
ضحكْتُI laughed فيهاin it وإِنِّيand indeed I قدhave بَكَيْتُwept بهاbecause of it
فالجهلُfor ignorance أَضْحَكَنيmade me laugh والعَقْلand reason أَبْكانيmade me weep
I laughed in it, and indeed I wept because of it;
I laughed in it though I had cried over it
ignorance made me laugh, and reason made me weep.
Ignorance made me laugh, wisdom made me cry

All this, though I attained what no one else attained
I attained what none attained in times
in all time, in fulfilling my desires in my native lands.
Of attainment or dwellings with dwellings

Screened by honor, no hand rises above mine
Veiled with honor no hand contends against my hand
by force, and my authority surpasses the sultan's.
Or rules over my rule and station

Between the twin honors of rank and generosity,
Between two mighty ones of glory and nobility
reaching the twin heights of standing and distinction.
And two lofty ones of worth and stature
أُكْسَىI am clothed وأَخْلعُand I cast off أَثوابَrobes of النَّعيمluxury فكَمand how often

I am clothed in robes of luxury and cast them off; how often
I am clothed and robed in garbs of bounty after
I trailed my hems and sleeves in pride!
Dragging the trains of my robes in wilderness
منعَّمٌpampered بينamid جنَّاتgardens مُعجَّلَةٍgranted in advance

Pampered amid gardens granted in advance,
Blessed amidinstant gardens and whatever virgins and youths I desire
and add as many houris and youths as you wish.
And how many a beauty did captivate me without war

How often I was captured without war, and how often enchanted
And tempted the human weakness in my eye
was the pupil of my eye there by a human eye!
And how oft the sun of day with it

And often the sun of day became there
Lay down to rest and the stars of night grew intoxicated
a bedmate, and the full moons my drinking companions.
I tire and weary of embraces and kisses
أَعْيَاI grow weary وأَتعبُand I tire منfrom ضمٍّembraces ومنand from قُبَلٍkisses

فأَستريحُso I find rest إِلىin راحwine ورَيْحَانِand sweet basil
I grow weary and tired from embraces and kisses,
And find rest in quiescence and delight
so I find rest in wine and sweet basil.
Then I refrain though if my self-respect

Then I desisted; had I not been restrained by my disdain
Did not forbid me grayness would forbid me.
for the times, gray hair would have restrained me.
Grayness has turned the locks of my heart gray
قدindeed شيَّبmade gray الشيبُgray hair أَوطارَthe desires of الفُؤَادِthe heart كَمَاjust as

Gray hair has grayed the heart's desires, just as
As the two new crescents have worn my fresh white temples
day and night wore out the freshness of my longings.
Seek not my love, O twenty-year maid
لاdo not ترغبيlong ياO ابنةdaughter of العشرينَtwenty years فيfor صِلَتيunion with me
إِنَّindeed الثلاثِينَthirty years هدَّتْshattered ثُلْثَa third of أَرْكَانيmy pillars
Do not long for union with me, O daughter of twenty years;
For thirty has toppled a third of my pillars
thirty years have shattered a third of my pillars.
Oh, my abundant sorrows and griefs
فياso, oh لكَثْرةِhow abundant أَشجانيmy sorrows وأَحْزَانيand my griefs

وياand oh لِقلةِhow few أَنصاريmy supporters وأَعْوانيand my helpers
So, how many are my sorrows and griefs,
And little supporters and aiders I have
and how few my supporters and helpers!
Ask the days about me, ask none but them
سَلنيask me عنabout الدَّهرtime لاdo not تَسْأَلْask سَوَايَanyone but me بهabout it

ولاand do not تسلْنيَask me عنabout همِّيmy worry وأَحْزَانيand my sorrows
Ask me about time; ask no one but me about it,
And ask not of my anxiety and sorrows
but do not ask me about my worry and sorrows.
If I weep then shun my company
وإِنand if بكَيْتُI weep فنكِّبْthen keep away عنfrom مُجَاوَرَتيbeing near me
واحذَرْand beware وإِيَّاكَand take care منof طُوفَانِthe flood of أَجْفَانيmy eyelids
And if I weep, avoid coming near me,
And beware the flood of my streaming eyes
and beware—take care—of the flood from my eyelids.
As for my tears, fear and vigilance
أَمَّاas for دُمُوعِيmy tears وخَوْفيand my fear مَعْalong with مُراقَبَتيmy vigilance
فمنso from ذُنُوبيmy sins وطُغْيانيand my transgression وعِصْيانيand my disobedience
As for my tears and fear, along with my vigilance,
They are from my sins, tyranny and disobedience
they spring from my sins, my transgression, and my disobedience.
Worry, tears, fear and begging hands
همّanxiety ٌودَمْعٌand tears وخَوْفٌand fear وافتقارُand poverty of يَدٍa hand
هذيthese خُصُومٌadversaries وماand not هَذَانِthese two خَصْمانِtwo opponents
Anxiety, tears, fear, and poverty of hand—
These are disputants, and what disputants!
these are adversaries, not just a pair of foes.
To you my eyes, O world, to you my separation
إِليكِaway with you عنيَfrom me ياO دُنْيَاworld إِليكaway with you فَليfor I have
فيtoward وصْلunion with مِثْلِكِyour like شَانُthe attitude of المبغِضِone who loathes الشَّانيone who hates
Away from me, O world, away! For I have
In your union the hater delights like lovers
toward union with your like the attitude of one who loathes and hates.
In the loneliness of the grave and worms dwelling in it
فيin وَحْشَةِthe desolation of القَبْرthe grave والدُّودِand the worms المقيمِdwelling بهin it
شُغْلٌa preoccupation لِنَفْسِيَfor my soul عنaway from دَارِيmy house وبُسْتَانيand my garden
The grave's desolation and the worms that dwell in it
Are occupation for my soul from my homes and gardens
distract my soul from my house and garden.
I speak of my homes and neighbors in self-deceit
أَقولI say دَارِيmy house وجِيرانيand my neighbors مُغَالَطةًin self-deception
والقبرُand the grave دَارِيَmy house والأَمْوَاتُand the dead جِيرَانيmy neighbors
I say 'my house' and 'my neighbors' in self-deception,
For the grave is my home and the dead are my neighbors
but the grave is my house, and the dead my neighbors.
I will widen the grave with righteous deeds, repair it
سأُوسِعُI shall widen القَبْرَthe grave بالأَعمالِwith deeds أُصلحُهاI perfect them
جُهْديwith all my effort وأَلْبَسُand I wear زُهْدِيmy renunciation قَبْلَbefore أَكفَانيmy shrouds
I shall make the grave spacious through deeds I perfect
And wear my asceticism before my shroud
to the best of my ability, and don my renunciation before my shrouds.
I responded to the call of God when He called
وقدand indeed أَجَبْتُI answered نِدَاءَthe call of اللهِGod حِينَwhen دَعَاHe called
وقلتُand I said لَبَّيْكَat Your service عنout of شوْقيmy longing وأَشْجَانيand my sorrows
And I answered God's call when He called,
And said: Here I am! out of yearning and ecstasy
and said, 'At Your service,' out of my longing and sorrows.
If I am rightly guided while others stray in blindness
فإِنْso if رَشَدْتI am rightly guided وغَيْرِيwhile another besides me فيin غوايَتِهhis error
جهلاًthrough ignorance فإِنِّيthen indeed I am بصيرٌsighted بَيْنَamong عُمْيانthe blind
So if I am rightly guided while another remains in his error,
I am seeing amid the blind out of ignorance
through ignorance, then I am one who sees among the blind.
And if I leave the world and its pleasures willingly
وإِنand if خَرَجْتُI leave منfrom الدُّنْيَاthe world ولذَّتِهاand its pleasure
طوعاًwillingly فياthen oh ربْحَthe gain of بَخْتيَmy fortune بَعْدَafter خُسْرانِloss
And if I leave the world and its pleasure
What a profitable loss after ruin!
willingly, oh, how my fortune has prospered after loss!
Why should I grieve over the world and its pleasures
وكيفand how آسيI grieve علىover الدُّنْيَاthe world ولذَّتِهاand its pleasure
وقدand indeed تعوَّضْتُI have taken in exchange بالبَاقيwith the everlasting عَنِin place of الفَانيthe fleeting
And how can I grieve for the world and its pleasure,
When I gained the Everlasting in place of the vanishing?
when I have taken the everlasting in place of the fleeting?
