The branch's slenderness is vexation at your swaying;
The slenderness of the branch is anger at your bending it,
And all estrangement is but part of your unjust cruelty.
And the sum of estrangement is part of your plucking it.
ماnot زلتُI ceased والحبُّand love لاnot تفنَىperish عجائِبهُits wonders

أَموتُI die فيكَfor you وأَحْياand I live منfrom جَنَىthe fruit of فِيكاyour mouth
I have never ceased—and love's wonders never fade—
I have not ceased, and the wonders of love do not fade away,
To die for you and live on the fruit of your mouth.
To die in you, and live from the harvest in you.
فمنso whoever يَخَلُّكforsakes you يأْخُذْtakes حظَّthe share of مُهْجتهhis soul

منof الرَّشادright guidance ولكِنْbut مَنwho يُخَلِّيكاleaves you
So whoever forsakes you secures his soul's share
So whoever leaves you takes his share of guidance,
Of right guidance—but who can forsake you?
But who can make you leave?
وليand I have إِذاwhen هجرabandon العشَّاقthe lovers منfrom مَلَلweariness

And I have, when lovers abandon out of weariness,
And I, when lovers are weary of passion,
An estrangement that hopes for you, or a shunning that draws near you.
Have an estrangement that seeks you, or disdain that brings me near you.

أَينَwhere الَّذِيthe one who عنهfrom him ياO قلبيmy heart يُسلِّيكاmakes you forget
My heart sought to forget, so I said to it:
And my heart wanted solace, so I said:
"Where, my heart, is one who could make you forget him?"
Where is that which would console you, O my heart, from it?
وليسand is not آسيكyour healer منof دَاءِthe sickness of الغرامpassionate love بهfor him

Nothing heals you of the sickness of loving him
And your harm from the sickness of passion is not
But his favor—oh, how I long for your healer!
Save his pleasure. Oh longing for the one who harms you!

How many a reproacher over you have I kissed on the mouth,
How many reproachers in you I have kissed their smiles
When your name passed through it as he named you!
When your name flowed in them as they named you.

My tears have run dry, though they say weeping is joy;
My tears flowed though they said crying is joy,
I envy only the eye of one who weeps for you.
So I envy none but the eye that cries for you.
إِنيindeed I لأَخْفَىI surely fade from sight وتبدوand you appear أَنْتyou مشتهراًconspicuous

Indeed I fade from sight, while you appear conspicuous;
I hide while you are famous,
For sorrow hides me, while beauty reveals you.
So grief and beauty hide me and display you.

The bright stars spoke these truthful words to you:
The stars said to you in truth:
"How foolish the full moon was when it tried to imitate you!"
How foolish is the moon when it tries to depict you!
ياO بدرُfull moon إِنif كنتَyou are تشكوyou complain فيin الظَّلامthe darkness أَذىًharm

O full moon, if in darkness you complain of harm
O moon, if you complain of harm from darkness
From losing your way, my full moon will guide you there.
Of going astray, then my full moon guides you.

And if you wish the meanings of beauty set down,
And if you want the meanings of beauty affirmed
Write, for the face of the heart's beloved dictates to you.
Then write - the face of the heart's beloved dictates them to you.

Enough! Then dictate tales of passion to him;
Come, so hear the discourses of passion for him
For his wishes lie only in your dictations.
For his wishes are only in my wishes for you.

I ask God's forgiveness: I have forgotten all but
I ask God's forgiveness! I have forgotten all
Your promises, lost through your feigned forgetfulness.
Except promises to you lost in my forgetfulness of you.

And the veil of a night of union sheltered us all night,
The veil of the night of union covered us
Until I smiled; then the veil was torn away.
Until I smiled and the veil was torn.

You were complained of to lightning, O flash of his smiling mouth,
Silent for lightning, O flashing of his smile,
By the longest night; and I find lightning complaining of you.
The night of perfection threw lightning, complaining of you.

The days of union with you were, in their loveliness,
The days of your company, from their cheerfulness,
Stars to onlookers amid your nights.
Were stars to beholders in your nights.

O you dwelling far away, whom remembrance brings near,
O you who moved from the house and memories bring you closer!
Even if you have gone far, remembrance brings you near.
If you moved away, memories will bring you near.

Bring your heart close to mine in an embrace;
Bring your heart near to my heart in an embrace -
Perhaps that heart's tenderness will prove contagious to you.
Perhaps the softness of that heart will pass over to you.

You own my heart—tell me how I can turn it away.
You have possessed my heart, so tell me how to divert it,
And you possess my soul—tell me how I can ransom you.
And you have enthralled my soul, so tell me how to ransom it.

Set aside owning and freeing me: I am a man
Leave off owning me and freeing me - I am a man
Who has become al-Fadil ibn Ali's slave.
Who for the virtuous Ali bin Abi Talib has become enslaved.

He mastered Time along with my heart, and I said to it:
Time has possessed my heart, so I said:
"O Time, may this gladden me and gladden you!"
O time, it brings me low and brings you low.

The speaker of excellence does not display it breathlessly,
One who utters virtue does not display it boastfully,
And the master of speech does not conceal it through exhaustion.
And the virtuous does not conceal his words stealthily.

I seek protection for your glory from neglect; no reason
I seek refuge for your glory from neglect without cause
Requires that my appearing should hide your pearls.
Which rules that my appearance makes your rising light hidden.

Do not go to him; stay, O seeker of his bounty: you will find
Do not come to him, and stay, O you who seek him, you will find
His bounty coming to you, and the world favoring you.
His bounty comes to you and the world comes to you.

If your circumstances are straitened, he broadens them;
If you are straitened, then it will expand it,
Or if you are dead, his bounty brings you to life.
Or if you were dead, then by grace he will give you life.

Time said to whoever approaches a hand other than his:
Time said to those who come with nothing but their hands:
"How little need you had of one who cannot enrich you!"
What would make you rich but one who can enrich you?

He returned slaves to freedom; and how often
He restored kingdoms to freemen, and how much
Favors from him have turned free men into slaves!
Of his making returned as freemen, owned kingdoms.

Those noble deeds: certainty of them has left
Those virtues, certainty did not leave in the soul
No conjecture in the soul, nor doubt in the heart.
Any doubt, nor in the heart any skepticism of them.

If I extol them to excess, his envier says:
When I exult in them, the envious one says:
"I seek God's forgiveness, but not for your exaggeration."
I ask God's forgiveness but for my exultation in you!

O you, so inventive in your extravagant giving,
O you who has mastered giving to excess -
I see you will give away even some of your lofty virtues.
I see you will give the highest meanings.

We find the meanings of lofty virtues dazzling in you,
We find sublime meanings in you shining,
And draw our meanings from your meanings.
And we derive meanings from your meanings.

Generosity grows only upon your heights, just as
Generosity does not sprout but in your soil, just as
Poverty is cut down only in your dwellings.
Poverty is not harvested but in your fields.

The one you have worn down with envy seeks to match your reach;
He who envies your stature out of his meanness
Whence, and how, when he lacks what is in you?
Wants your downfall - but how, when, for what in you?
لمّاwhen رأَيتُI saw المساعِيthe endeavors فيكin you مُعجِزَةًbeyond others' powers

When I saw your endeavors were beyond others' powers,
When I saw the efforts beyond you were futile,
I excused anyone unable to match your endeavors.
I excused those who were incapable of your efforts.

I have come to you, O rain for humankind, thirsty
I have come to you, O cloudburst of the land, thirstily,
In my fortunes, since your returning favors reached them only at intervals.
As it went away in my condition, your returning to me.

You give to your enemies, until I almost, in anger,
You give your enemies until I have nearly, from anger,
Say, "Give to me—and reckon me among your enemies!"
Said: give me, and give me some of your enemies!

I seek refuge for your glory from my neglect without cause -
And how could someone like me be forsaken by you?
And how can the like of me be neglected by you?

And all I have in you is a patron to whom I say:
And for me you are a master of whom I say:
"It suffices me and you that I am among your clients."
You are enough for me, and it's enough that I am your loyal one.

For my survival is gained from you alone,
So my survival is only from your granting,
And my life comes only from your benefactions.
And my life only from your hands.

And I have praised because I am praiseworthy through you,
And I have hoped, for I passed the night placing my hope in you.
And I have hoped because I spend the night hoping for you.

So may God make whoever is loyal to you laugh in joy
So may God laugh at whoever opposes you joyfully
In your goodness, and disgrace your hater's standing.
With righteousness, and disgrace the status of those who oppose you.
