قُلْsay لإِبْنِto Ibn (son of) المُعْنَزِّal-Muʿnazz يَرْحَمُكَmay He have mercy on you اللَّهُGod
قُلْ لإِبْنِ المُعْنَزِّ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ
ولاand not قُدَّbe cut off منfrom أَدِيمِكَyour skin شِبْرُa handspan
ولا قُدَّ من أَدِيمِكَ شِبْرُ
Say to Ibn al-Muʿnazz—may God have mercy on you,
Say to the son of Mu'nazzar, may God have mercy on you,
and may no handspan be cut from your skin—
And do not move an inch from your place,
إِنif تكنshe be عذَّبَتْكَshe tormented you بالحُسْنِwith beauty شَرٌّSharr (evil)
إِن تكن عذَّبَتْكَ بالحُسْنِ شَرٌّ
إِنَّindeed مَحبُوبَتيmy beloved وَحقِّكَand by your honor خيْرُKhayr (good)
إِنَّ مَحبُوبَتي وَحقِّكَ خيْرُ
If Sharr has tormented you with beauty,
If beauty has tortured you, it is evil,
indeed my beloved, by your honor, is Khayr.
Indeed my beloved is better for you and more right.
