And faith's desolation when the gathering place grew dark!
And desolation of religion when the caller grew dark.

throughout the worlds, I would surely weary my scouts.
In both worlds, I have burdened frequenters.

After tearing of clothes and shedding innocence.

The moan of “noon” and “saad” by the heart’s hearing.

so that she was heard even from the land of Baghdad.
It was heard from the land of Baghdad.

By the grave venting of sorrows and agonies.

From fate that killed the best of my aides.”

And said “Woe unto you, you have delighted my enemies.”

Fasting said “Alas my fervor.”

filling the ears of lowlands and highlands.
Filling the valleys and heights with laments.

Though he had hoped to be his redeemer.

Rather, would that I were his redeemer
with my life, my wealth, and my children!
With my soul, wealth and children.

My heart is captive in grief for him, with no release;
My heart is captive to him, with no relief
my patience over him is slain, with none to pay its blood-money.
My patience upon him is slain, with no course.

Had he lived he would have been my close friend and brought me near,
to God; but God willed to keep me far away.
But God wanted to distance me.

But my fate was stingy with my aid and joy.

The day of my misery is the day of my birth.

Mourn him, for you without him
but grazing livestock and camel-herds.
Are like cattle and beasts of burden.

pouring tears in pairs, not singly.
That drip pairs of tears, not solitary.

nor do I say, 'May the cloud of evening and morning water you.'
I do not say the passing wind quenched you.

gazing at me—indeed, listening to my recitation.
You pay heed to my persona, nay listen to my chant.

O the fervor of a heart for one present yet departed.

pouncing and devouring my lion-cubs and my lions.
Pounces, preying on my lions and wolves.

Though often they surprise me without appointment.
