يأَيُّهَاO you الغصنُthe branch الذيthat قدhas ذَوَىwithered
بلrather أَيُّهاO النجمُthe star الذيthat قدْhas هَوىfallen
O branch that has withered,
Nay, O star that has fallen!
بكيتُI wept منfor حُسنِكyour beauty كيفhow اخْتَفَىit vanished
عنَّاfrom us ومنand for شَخْصِكyour form كيفhow انْطَوىit was folded away
I wept for your beauty—how it vanished
From us—and for your form—how it was folded away.
كَتَمْتَyou concealed ذاكَthat الوجهَface لماwhen انْتَهىit reached perfection
حُسْناًin beauty وذاكand that القدَّfigure لماwhen اسْتَوىit became fully grown
You concealed that face just as it reached perfection
In beauty, and that figure just as it grew full.
بُليتُI was worn away فَوْقَabove الأَرضِthe earth حَزْناًin grief كماjust as
بُلِيتُI was worn away فيهاwithin it فكِلاَنَاso both of us سَوَىare alike
I was worn away above the earth with grief, just as
I was worn away within it; so we are alike.
ومرَّand he passed بيby me يَرْوِيrecounting حديثَthe tale of الأَسَىsorrow
فاسمعso hear بعينيْكَwith your eyes الَّذِيwhat قدْhas رَوَىrecounted
And he passed by me, recounting sorrow’s tale;
So hear with your eyes what he has recounted.
واوَحْشَةَalas for the loneliness الكاساتِof the cups منbereft of شِبْهِهَاtheir counterpart
ريقاًin saliva وأَنفاساًand breaths تُدَاوِيthat heal الجَوَىlove’s burning pain
Alas for the cups’ loneliness, bereft of their counterpart
In saliva and in breaths that heal love’s burning pain.
فياso O جَوَىanguish القلبِof the heart تَضَاعَفْredouble فقدfor indeed
تَرَحَّلَhas departed الحيُّthe tribe وأَقْوىand lies deserted اللِّوىthe sandy bend
So, O anguish of my heart, redouble, for
The tribe has departed, and the sandy bend lies deserted.
لَهْفيmy grief علىfor ريقِكyour saliva منas a مَوْردٍspring
غَاضَran dry وكمand how many a صبٍّlovelorn one بهfrom it ماdid not ارْتَوَىquench his thirst
I grieve for your saliva—a spring
That ran dry; how many a lover never quenched his thirst there!
وجمرةٌand an ember فيin خدّهhis cheek ماhas not انْطَفَتْgone out
لكنbut قَوَىgrew strong قلبيmy heart بهاthrough it فاكتوىand so was seared
And an ember in his cheek has not gone out,
But my heart grew strong through it, and so was seared.
أَعياproved powerless دواءُthe remedy الطِّبِّof medicine فيagainst سُقْمهِhis sickness
والموتُand death داءٌa disease ماthere is not لهfor it منany دَوَاcure
Medicine’s remedy proved powerless against his sickness,
And death is a disease for which there is no cure.
حسدتُI envied فيهon his account التُرْبَthe dust إِذwhen ضَمَّهit embraced him
دونيinstead of me وقبراًand a grave فيهwithin it لمَّاwhen ثوىhe came to rest
I envied the dust when it embraced him
Instead of me, and the grave when he came to rest within it.
ياO منone whom حَوَاهُenclosed him فيin الدُّناthis world لَحدهُhis burial niche
والقبرand the grave مسرورٌis glad بماin what قدْhas حَوَىenclosed
O one whose burial niche has enclosed him in this world,
And the grave rejoices in what it has enclosed—
تظنُّنيdo you think me أَسلوكَI could cease grieving for you أَوor أَنَّهُthat it
ينساكَforgets you قلبيmy heart لاno وحقِّby the sacred right of الهوىlove
Do you think I could cease grieving for you, or that
My heart could forget you? No, by love’s sacred right!
