    My gratitude to him whom I loved and desired

    Is a parched man's gratitude for the sweet water of the watering place.

    He reveals and conceals, keeping reserve before all people,

    Except toward me, and chastity—except with me.

    وإِذا خَلَوْتُ بِهِ فظبيُ الأَجْرَع

    So when he sees someone other than me, he is a lion of Khafiyyah;

    And when I am alone with him, a gazelle of the sandy plain.

    And when lovers lament the shedding of their tears,

    I have come to thank him for the surge of tears.

    So the male in him has shielded every female,

    And the turbaned one in him has ransomed every veiled one.
