O envy of the astounded poet!

in killing the Muslim for the unbeliever.
In your killing a Muslim with an infidel

Passion is mine alone, apart from all mankind,
So the ecstasy is for me alone without the people
and sovereignty belongs to God and al-Zahir.
And the kingdom belongs to Allah and the apparent one

The captive may gain prestige through the captor

the helpless man's hostility toward the conqueror.
Just as it brought misery to an infidel

He returned with victory and revived with it
the undoer of blood-feuds, the maker of blood-debts.

I am no complainer, but one who gives thanks.
That I fear for my tears upon my watcher

nor any helper against your tyranny.
And poetry is a sin unless for his glory

on a night with neither forbidding voice nor rebuke.

لَمْnot أَنْسI forget مِنْbecause of إِنْعامِهhis beneficence ذَاكِرِيthe one who remembers me
Then bring it and drink to the praise of one
Equal, neither in the desert nor in the city
whose bounty keeps me from forgetting him who remembers me.
King of kings of earth in his matter

أُلصِقُI attach باسمِيto my name سِمةَthe mark of الشَّاعِرthe poet
Were it not for truthfulness in praising him, I would not
With generosity or the cutting sword
attach to my name the mark of a poet.
Praised in the complaining time
والشِّعرand poetry ذَنْبٌa sin فيin سِوىanything but مَجْدِهhis glory
تُرجَىis hoped for لَهُfor it مَغْفرةُthe forgiveness of الْغافرِthe Forgiver
And poetry on anything but his glory is a sin
And just in the tyrannical time
for which the Forgiver's pardon is hoped.
His giving was for him first
وكلُّand every شِعْرpoem قُلْتُI spoke فيabout غَيْرِهsomeone other than him

And every poem I have spoken of another
But it was without last
is merely a trial of the mind.
Rarities of generosity, he has regular

The king, the sovereign al-Aziz, in whose
When the regular is seen as rare
surging beneficence I am drowned.

His bounty, both manifest and present,
Oh wonder of the demolisher, the constructor!
is found among desert-dwellers and townsfolk.
He pardons the sinner when able

A king whose command holds the kings of earth,
How excellent is pardon from the able!
through generosity or the keen, severing sword.
So the inspiration of the inspired is his favor
ممدوَّحٌmuch praised فيin الزَّمنthe age الْمُشتَكَىthe lamented
وعَادلٌand just فيin الزَّمَنِthe age الْجَائِرthe unjust
Much praised in an age men lament,
And his forbearance excuses the stumbler
and just in an unjust age.
His conduct in generosity has no equal
وبذلُهand his giving كَانhad لَهُfor it أَوَّلٌa beginning
لكِنَّهُbut it كَانَwas بِلاَwithout آخِرan end
His giving had a beginning,
And how much precedent he has
but it has had no end.
His sword brought so much joy to a Muslim
فنادِرُso the rare in الجُودِgenerosity لَهُfor him راتِبٌroutine

حِينَwhen يُرىis seen الرَّاتِبُthe regular كَالنَّادِرas the rare
What is rare in generosity is routine for him,
Just as it brought misery to an infidel
when regular giving is viewed as a rarity.
How much victories he claimed and became victorious
يهدِمُhe demolishes مَالاًwealth حِينَwhile يبنيhe builds عُلاًeminence

He demolishes wealth while building eminence;
He is described as the winner and the successful
oh, the wonder of the demolisher who builds!
He returned with victory and revived with it
يَعْفُوhe pardons عَنconcerning الْجَانيthe offender علىwith قُدرَةٍpower

He pardons the offender while he has power;
The memory of his father, the victorious king
how fine is pardon from one with power!
O king, the source of his favors
فَمُنهضُso the raiser of المنهاضthe broken إِنعامُهhis beneficence

His bounty raises up the broken,
Is to stop at what comes and goes
and his forbearance excuses the stumbler.
I am the one who came to you, not for my own sake
سيرتُهhis conduct فيin الجودِgenerosity لاno مِثْلهاequal to it
وكمand how many لَهhe has مِنof مَثَلٍa saying سَائِرwidely circulated
His conduct in generosity has no equal,
But out of love for your magnificent grace
and how many a saying of his travels far!
I have sent from my rainy thoughts

And how many a Muslim his sword has gladdened,
So listen to what I compose
just as, through it, he has distressed many an unbeliever.

How many victories he won, so that he became
called the successful and the victorious!

He returned with victory, thereby reviving
the memory of his father, King al-Nasir.

O king whose fountain of beneficence
is dedicated to those who come and go!

I am the one who came to you, not for gifts,
but for love of your dazzling excellence.

You have rained generosity upon me; now listen to what
I compose from my rain-giving mind.
