وقالُواand they said مددتyou drew عليهِover it الحِجاباthe veil
In your soil I buried my eye.
In your grave I buried my sight
And they said, “You drew the veil over it.”
And they said I draped the shroud over it
بلاهُafflicted it بهِin it رَمدٌeye inflammation لاnot بِلىًdecay
لأَنِّيbecause I حثوتُI heaped عليهِupon it التُّرَابَاthe earth
Inflammation afflicted it there, not decay,
No, dust blinded it not a shroud
Because I heaped earth upon it.
For I heaped dust over it

And I have tasted nothing more painful than losing her,
Never did I taste a greater pain than losing it
Though I have already been bereaved of youth.
Though I have outlived my youth
