لئِنif indeed كنتِyou were منfrom عينيmy eye نُقِلْتِyou were moved إِلىto قلْبيmy heart
فقدthen indeed صارَhas become أَقْصَىthe furthest البُعْدِdistance فيwithin أَقْرَبthe nearest القُرْبِnearness
If indeed you have been moved from my eye into my heart,
If you were transferred from my eyes to my heart,
then the farthest distance now lies within the closest nearness.
The greatest distance became the closest proximity.
وإِنand if كانis هذاthis الصدُّshunning منكِfrom you تَعتُّباًa reproach
عليَّagainst me فعِنْدِيthen I have أَلفُa thousand عَتْبٍreproaches منof العتْبِreproach
And if this shunning of yours is a reproach
And if this estrangement from you is a reproach,
against me, I have a thousand reproaches of my own.
Then with me there are a thousand reproaches.
وإِنand if كنتِyou are فيin شُغْلٍan occupation فهلْthen is هُوَit شَاغِلٌabsorbing
كشُغْلكِlike your preoccupation قِدْماًformerly بالدَّلاَلِwith coyness وبالعُجْبِand with self-admiration
And if you are busy, does anything occupy you
And if you are busy, is there anything as busy,
as coyness and self-admiration occupied you of old?
As your feet with coquetry and self-admiration?
وإِنْand if كنتِyou are غضْبىangry منbecause of فِرَاقِيparting from me فإِنَّهُthen it is
ولاand do not تَظْلمِيbe unjust ذنبُthe fault المَنِيَّةof death لاnot ذنْبيmy fault
And if you are angry at parting from me, it is—
And if your anger at my separation enraged you,
do not be unjust—death's fault, not mine.
Then do not blame me, it was not my fault but that of Death.
دَعِيleave ذاthat وقُولِيand say كيْفhow خُلِّيتِyou were abandoned للرَّدىto death
وأُخْرِجْتِand you were brought out منْfrom خلفِbehind المقاصيرِsecluded chambers والحُجْبِand curtains
Leave that; tell me how you were abandoned to death
Leave this talk and tell me how you were left to chance,
and brought out from behind secluded chambers and curtains.
And were taken out from behind curtains and veils.
وكيفand how اعتدَىtrespassed ذاكthat الحمَامُdeath علىupon الحِمىthe sanctuary
وكيفand how سَبَاكِcarried you captive الموتdeath جَهْراًopenly بِلاَwithout حَرْبِwar
How did that doom trespass upon your sanctuary?
And how did that dove dare trespass the sanctuary?
How did death carry you captive openly, without a war?
And how did your death openly raid you without any war?
وكيفand how أَراقُواthey poured out ماءَthe water وجهِكof your face فيinto الثَّرَىthe soil

How did they pour the water of your face into the dust,
And how they shed the water of your face in the soil,
so its drinking, not mine, drained it away, excluding me?
So it was lost to me before I could drink it.
وكيفand how ابتَلَوْاthey afflicted تلكthose المَعَاطفbodily curves بالبِلَىwith decay
كمَاjust as امْتهنُواthey debased تلكthose الترائبَcollarbones بالتُّرْبِwith dust
How did they afflict those graceful curves with decay,
And how they tested those clothes with decay,
as they dishonored those collarbones with dust?
As they defiled those shrouds with dust.
بِرغْمِيَagainst my will قَدْindeed أُنْزِلْتِyou were lowered أَضْيَقthe narrowest مَنْزلٍdwelling
فَلاso no مَرحباًwelcome بالمنزِلِto the dwelling الواسعِwide الرَّحْبspacious
Against my will, you were lowered into the narrowest dwelling;
Despite me you were made to descend into the narrowest dwelling,
so no welcome to the wide and spacious dwelling!
So there is no “welcome” to that vast and spacious abode.
ومَاand not وجْهُكِyour face الوَجْهُthe face الذيthat غابَvanished فيin الثَّرَىthe soil

ولكنَّهُbut it is البَدْرُthe full moon الَّذِيthat غابَset فيin الغَرْبِthe west
Your face is not a face that vanished in the dust,
And your face is not the one that is lost in the soil,
but the full moon that set in the west.
But it is the full moon that has set in the horizon.
فلاso do not تَسْأَلِيask عنْabout حالِthe state دَارِكِof your home وانظُرِيand look

Do not ask about the state of your home; look
So do not ask about the condition of your house, and look,
at the ravine: its gazelle has left its dwelling empty.
At the place which the antelope of the valley left desolate.

Your houses wept, those that had found comfort in you,
Your houses that used to find comfort in you wept,
from grief, when they were suddenly robbed of you.
With grief when you were hastily taken away from them.
وربْعُكِand your dwelling أَضْحَىbecame خاشِعاًhumbled مُتصَدِّعاًcracked

Your dwelling became humbled and cracked,
And your valley has become submissive and with cracks,
and sank until its highest part was like a pit.
And it became black until its surface became like furrows.
ويَنْدُبُand it laments حَتىuntil يسمَعhears الخلقُall creation نَدْبَهُits lament

مُصَلاَّكِyour prayer-place بالتسبيحِwith glorification لاnot العُودُthe lute بالضَّرْبِby strumming
It laments until all creation hears its lament:
It mourns until people hear its mourning,
your prayer-place chanting praise, not a lute being struck.
Not with the melody of lutes but with the striking of spears.
وحَاشاكِand far were you منfrom لَغْوٍidle talk وحَاشاكِand far were you منfrom رَدِّretorts

Far were you from idle talk, far from retorts;
Far from you is nonsense, far from you is rejection,
far from frivolity, far from play.
Far from you is frivolity, far from you is playfulness.

She remained, in beauty, a lamp at the qibla,
A lantern of beauty has not ceased in charm,
and in purity—not a fragrant blossom for revelers and drinking.
Nor a myrtle of purity in drinking and being drunk.
إِذاwhen ظَهرَتْshe appeared كانwas الحِجَابُthe veil منof الحِجىَwisdom
وإِنand if سفرتshe unveiled نابَstood in الحَيَاءُmodesty عنfor النَّقْبِface-veils
When she appeared, wisdom itself was her veil;
When she appeared, the veil was from splendor,
if she unveiled, modesty took the place of face-veils.
And if she traveled, modesty substituted for the face cover.
ومِنْand from طبعِهاher nature ذاكthat العفافُchastity وكسْبُهاand her cultivation

وماand how أَحسَنbeautiful الطبعَthe nature الذِيthat زِيدَwas enhanced بالكسْبِby cultivation
That chastity sprang from her nature and her cultivation;
And that chastity is of her nature, and her livelihood
how beautiful a nature enhanced by cultivation!
How good is the natural disposition that increased with earnings!
وقدand indeed طُوِيَتْshe was folded away منfrom قبلِbefore أَنْthat يَنْطوِيwould fold away الصِّباyouth

She was folded away before youth was folded away,
And she has passed away before the departure of youth,
and decayed before her fresh new garments did.
And she wore out before the wearing out of her clothes.
وأَمّاas for حَديثيmy story أَنَّنيthat I am الثَّاكلُthe bereaved one الَّذيwho

As for my story, I am the bereaved one who
As for my talk that I am the negligent one,
was long known, for your sake, as the lovesick lover.
Who spent some time with her known for his passion –
ودَافعْتُand I fended off عنكِfrom you الموتdeath بالطِّبِّwith medicine جَاهِداًstriving hard
وذاand this غَلطٌan error هلcan يُدفعbe repelled الموتُdeath بالطِّبِّwith medicine
I strove to fend death off from you with medicine;
And I warded off death from her with medicine, struggling –
that was an error: can medicine repel death?
This is a mistake. Can death be warded off with medicine?
وحُمَّاكِand your fever غَاثتgave aid فيwithin حِمَاكِyour sanctuary وأَدخلتْand brought in

Your fever lent aid within your sanctuary and brought
Those who came to give you solace during your protection, caused you distress,
wasting sickness upon you, until it laid it open to plunder.
And brought anxiety upon you until they allowed you to be looted.

It visited you every other day so its visits might be loved;
They visited you secretly so that the visit would be more beloved,
how little it knew of death within that interval!
Oh how ignorant they were of death during that absence!
وماand not أَناI مِمَّنْamong those who شَقَّtore ثوْباًa garment وإِنَّهand indeed it

I am not one to rend a garment; that
I am not one who tore his clothes although that
is a carefree man's act, betraying his pretense.
Is an act devoid for its doer of ostentation.
نَعَمyes كبِدِيmy liver والقلبُand the heart منِّيَwithin me شُقِّقَاwere both torn

Yes, my liver and my heart were torn apart
Yes, my liver and heart were torn,
in grief for you: this is my heart's membrane, that my liver's.
Grieving over you. This is my compassion and my concealment.

I tried to rise when I stumbled, but did not stand
I set about to stand up but I stumbled and did not
on my feet; instead, I fell upon my side.
Stand on my feet. Rather, I fell on my side.
وَرُزؤُكِand your loss أَشْهىmore desirable منthan سُهادِيmy sleeplessness لناظِرِيto my eye

Your loss is dearer to my eye than my sleeplessness,
Seeing you after you passed away is more delightful to my eyes
and to my body than my soul, and more desired by my heart.
Than my pillow, and my soul to my body and wishes to my heart.

So spill my vessels, oh my tear pour,
O my liver, turn gray; O my burning grief, blaze!
And oh my liver grow gray and oh my agony grow severe

تُريحُfrees ثرَاكِyour dust الحُرَّnoble مِنfrom مِنَّةِthe indebtedness السُّحْبto the clouds
Of all myself, I spared my eye only because it
I have not spared from me an eye except so that it
frees your noble dust from indebtedness to the clouds.
Alleviates the heat of your tomb from the annoyance of clouds.

My eye shed its very light after its tears
My onlookers have cried with light after their tears over you
for you; that is enough for it, but not enough for me.
And this suffices them regarding you, not me.
وواللهِand by God ماnot وفَّاكِhas paid you حقَّكِyour due مَدْمَعِيmy tearful eye

By God, my weeping eye has not paid you your due,
By God my tears have not fulfilled your due right,
though it has made the earth sprout grass.
Even though it brought out grass from the earth.

The wilderness held its gathering of grief for you;
The wilderness held its mourning wake for you
rise and see the herd's mourning assembly amid the desert.
So stand and see amidst the plains the mourning throng of the flock
ومذْand since مُتِّyou died صَارتْbecame سَبعةُthe seven الشُّهبbright stars سِتَّةًsix

Since you died, the seven bright stars have become six;
Since you passed away seven gray hairs have become six,
what is darkness but mourning for the stars?
For is not dusk but mourning over gray hairs?
أَحِنُّI yearn إِليهَاfor her كُلَّevery يومٍday ولَيْلَةٍand night
حنينَthe yearning cry الحَنَايَاof bows لاَnot الرءومof a tender she-camel إِلىfor السَّقْبthe male camel-calf
I yearn for her every day and night,
I yearn for it every day and night,
with the keening of bows, not a mother camel's for her calf.
With the yearning of the lovesick, not with the yearning for shelter.
وآنَسَنيand kept me company مِنْbecause of بُعْدِهاher absence طُولُthe length وَحشَتيof my loneliness

وضاجَعنيand lay beside me فيin مَضْجَعيmy bed بَعْدَهاafter her كَرْبيmy anguish
Long loneliness kept me company in her absence,
My long desolation after her estranged me
and after her, anguish lay beside me in my bed.
And after her, my anxiety in my bed distressed me.
وأَيسرُand the least ماof what بيafflicts me أَنَّنيis that I مِنْfrom تَدَلُّهِيmy bewilderment

The least of my afflictions is that, in my bewilderment,
The easiest thing for me is that from my confusion,
I go at evening without thought, at morning without reason.
I go without senses and I wake up without a mind
أَغيبُI vanish ذُهُولاًin distraction ثمthen أَحْضُرُI become present فِكْرةًin thought
وأَعْلَمُand I know مَنْwho بيis with me ثُمthen أَسأَلُهمI ask them مَنْwho بيis with me
I vanish in distraction, then return in thought;
I disappear perplexed, then I attend to a thought
I know who is with me, then ask them who is with me.
And I know who I am then ask them who I am
عَدِمْتُI lost الصِّباyouth منfrom قَبْلهاbefore her وعَدِمْتُهاand I lost her

I lost youth before her, and then I lost her;
I lost youth before her and I lost her
more painful than losing youth is losing one who kindles youthful love.
And loss of youth is more painful than her loss

My state has come to resemble hers: do you think death
My state resembles hers so you see havoc
has ended her life, as I see it, or ended mine?
Has fulfilled its purpose whether I see or it fulfilled my purpose

This life turned against me and went too far
heaping bereavement upon my wounds, scar upon scar.
With anguish over my wound and mourning over my mourning

It raided my grazing herd and abetted my bloodshed;
It was jealous of my joy, helped against my blood
it persisted in wounding me, continued to revile me.
It insisted on my wound, it remained over my ulcer

Its hours are ravens, for every hour
And its hours are crows. For at every hour
brings me tidings of death and the raven's croak.
It gives me glad tidings of death therein and of mourning

For how long, for how long, a catastrophe after a catastrophe
will their adverse tempests shake my pillar?
That shakes my pillar with its shaking catastrophes?

So what is my business with this world and what is my business with enemies
What have I to do with contagion, and what with calamity?
And what is my business with contagion and what is my business with ordeals?

Indeed the heart of man has constricted and his position lowered
even were it between the two Simak stars and the Heart.
Even if he were between fishes and heart

It has been said that the rule of white hairs penetrates
upon humankind, bringing ease or hardship.
Upon the people of earth with debasement from it and by classification

If this is true, then the Bull and the Scorpion
And if this is true that Taurus and Scorpio
have harried this race with butting and stinging.
Have insisted upon this race with goring and stinging
أَياO تُرْبُdust ماnot أَنصفْتyou treated fairly نُضْرةthe freshness غُصنِهاof her branch
أَهذاis this صَنِيعُthe treatment التُّربِof dust بالغُصنof the branch الرَّطْبtender
O dust, you have wronged the freshness of her branch;
Oh soil, you did not do justice to the freshness of its branch
is this how dust treats a tender branch?
Is this the soil’s treatment of a moist branch?
وياand O عَاطِلاًone bare of adornment مِنْof عِقدِهاher necklace إِنَّindeed أَدْمُعِيmy tears
لأَكبَرُare surely larger ممَّاthan what فِيهِis in it مِنْof ذلِكthat الحَبِّbeadwork
O you now bare of her necklace, my tears
And oh you who prohibits from her necklace, my tears
are surely larger than the beads it holds.
Are greater than what little love is in it
خُذِيهاtake them وإِنْand if لمnot تنتظمْthey form a string فلرُبَّماthen perhaps
تحيَّلْتI contrived فيin تثْقِيبِهاpiercing them لكfor you بالهُدْبwith eyelashes
Take them; if they will not string together, perhaps
Take it even if it does not come together orderly
I can contrive to pierce them for you with my lashes.
Perhaps I pretended in arranging it for you in prose
هجرتُI forsook مَعانِيكِyour meanings التيwhich كنتِyou were لبَّهاtheir core
وغيريand someone else يرضىis content بالقُشُورwith husks عَنinstead of اللُّبِّthe kernel
I have forsaken all that evoked you, whose very core you were;
I abandoned your meanings that you inclined towards
others are content with husks instead of the kernel.
While others are pleased with the peels instead of the pith
وواصلتُand I kept company with قبراًa grave أَنتِyou فيهare in it أَضُمُّهُI embrace it
لصدرِيto my breast بلrather أُهدِيI bring الهناءَease إِلىto النَّصْبsuffering
I have kept company with a grave containing you, embracing it
And I befriended a grave in which you are, I hug it
to my breast—rather, I bring ease to suffering.
To my chest. Rather I present congratulations to the tombstone
وأُهْدىand offered إِليكِto you الذكرَremembrance مثلِيone like me وإِنَّهُand indeed it
سلاميَmy greeting لاnot أُهْدِيI send السلامgreetings مَعَwith الرَّكْبthe caravan
And one such as I has offered you remembrance; it
And I present to you the mention like myself and it is
is my greeting: I do not send greetings with the caravan.
My greeting not presented with the caravan
قدindeed اعْتاضhas taken in exchange ياO بُؤْسَwretchedness الذيof what اعتاضهit took in exchange فمِيmy mouth
بنظْمwith composing المرَاثيelegies عَنْinstead of مُقبَّلِكِyour kissed lips العَذْبsweet
My mouth has taken in exchange—how wretched its exchange!—
He who suffers what I suffered intercepted me, from
the composing of elegies in place of your sweet lips.
Composing elegies instead of your sweet kisses
قِفَاhalt, you two نَبْكِlet us weep مِنْfor ذكرىthe memory حبيبيof my beloved وقبرهand his grave
وقلْand say للَّتيto her who فيin القبْرthe grave حَلَّتْhas settled أَلاcome now هُبِّيrise
Halt, you two; let us weep for the memory of my beloved and his grave,
Stop crying from the memory of my beloved and her grave
and say to her who dwells in the grave: 'Awake!'
And tell the one in the grave who descended, “arise”!
وياand O ناصِحيmy adviser ماnot أَنتyou باللَّومby blame ناصِحِيmy adviser
ودعْand leave صُحْبَتيmy company ماnot أَنتyou فيin الحُزْنgrief منamong صَحْبيmy companions
O my adviser, your blame is no counsel to me;
And oh my advisor, you are not to blame advising me
leave my company: you are no companion in my grief.
Leave my company you are not in grief from my companions
ولستand you are not رفيقيmy companion فيon طريقa path إِنَّنيfor indeed I
سأَرْكبُI shall ride منهاof it كُلَّevery مُسْتوعَرrugged stretch صَعْبdifficult
Nor are you my companion on a path, for I
And you are not my friend in the way. I will indeed
shall ride through every rugged, difficult stretch of it.
Mount from it every rough and difficult terrain
ولاand do not تنهforbid شعريmy poetry عنfrom رثاهاlamenting her فإِنَّهُfor it is
منamong الفرضِobligations عِندِيin my view ندبُهاmourning her لاnot مِنamong النَّدْبrecommended acts
Do not forbid my verse to lament her, for
And do not prevent my poetry from eulogizing her for it is
to me, mourning her is obligatory, not merely recommended.
Incumbent upon me to mourn her, not from mourning
وقدand indeed بَليتْshe decayed تحتbeneath الثَّرىthe soil وتغيَّرْتand changed
وَوجدِيand my grief بهاfor her وحْدِيmine alone وحُبِّيand my love لهاfor her حبِّيmy love
She has decayed beneath the soil and changed,
She has worn out underneath the soil and changed
while my grief for her is mine alone, and my love for her remains my love.
While my love for her, my distress over her and my love for her is still my love
