If she granted me union for a day, I would never die;
Had she kept contacting me, I'd not have died,
Or, if she did not join me—oh, my death of grief for her!
Or hadn’t she contacted me, so let me die for her as I have lived.

To whom should I bequeath the inheritance of passion for her?
Never, never! I would accept no one for her.
Never! Never! I’d please no one with her.

How can I give freely what I have not numbered?
How can I count what I've not counted?

Then put her coquetry under oath, or call her supple grace to witness.
Consult fate or ask the spy.

I was bewitched by that eye that never slept
Just as I was burned by that cheek—may its flame never die.
And burned by that cheek that never cooled.

Her mouth gains nothing by denying my bloodshed,
Her mouth's denial of my blood is fruitless,
And her cheek has testified before the judge of beauty.
For her cheek has testified to the judge of beauty.

Until I saw wine and hail in her mouth.
To the point I saw wine and cold in her mouth.

Had it not been for her eyelashes, who'd have taught the gazelle coquetry
And taught the branch to sway, if not her figure?
Or the branch grace without her swaying gait?

And the pale narcissus complains of eye disease.

Is dearer to me than my own eye, even when mine stays awake.
Than my own awake, however bleary.

Tell Heaven I have found no bliss in you,
“Why have I found my bliss in you exhausted?”
My joy in you is done, completely spent.

She said: “My beauty is a blessing if it lasts,
And if you desire union with me, be a body.
And if you want me, become a body.”

While you weep dewdrops during daytime,
And seldom do the sun and a rainy day meet.”
Rarely do sun and dew combine.

My gaze did not lower itself on the day I saw her
My eyes lowered not out of pride when I saw her,
Out of pride; rather, it prostrated itself before that beauty.
But in awe of that beauty, humbly bent.

Likewise, my heart did not beat for her out of joy;
My heart stirred not with joy for her,
It only feared the day of parting, and so it trembled.
But quaked for fear of parting from her.

Through love, a man's slave becomes his master,
Through love a man's slave becomes his master,
And the gazelle grows bold enough to slay the lion.
And a gazelle contends until it bests a lion.

Of this by my tears or by my long-drawn sighs.
Or of my panting breaths that blew the fires?”

Except by kissing the hand of Abd al-Rahim.
Save Abd al-Rahim's kiss, his hand.

They'd never thirst again.

A hand that pours abundantly, so the rain cried, “Oh, sorrow!”
A hand whose bounty makes the rain exclaim,
And the sea, “Oh, grief!” and the night, “Oh, envy!”
The sea ebb, and the night envy.

Present for absent and witness alike.

A hand - God's hand created it to spread grace
Or restrain the aggression of enemies, or repel the hand of death.
Or defeat my foe, or return a stray.

Abd al-Rahim, none compared to him.

Of all who fixed affairs when damaged,
And rarely does what has become corrupt become sound again.
Rarely can what is damaged be fixed.

He awakened the fortune of the fortunate when it slumbered,
Who can rouse fortune's eyelid when it sleeps?
And who can wake good fortune if it sleeps?

Though there is no repelling a devil once it rebels.
And no revolting devil can be driven away.

Yet his due cannot be fulfilled, even if he were worshipped.
Yet his due cannot be paid, even in worship.

Until an envious man wishes to become his ransom.
Even the envious wish to be his ransom.

Star in sky, full moon when it appears.

He sits in the seat of honor, with the fates in attendance;
He sits invested while fates stand attendant -
Let whoever wishes to sit sit as he has sat.
Let one sit if he would sit as he did.

And come only to light their torch.

They have composed panegyrics for him,
But the gift they seek is from his counsels.
Yet they want his opinions for their codes.

He enriched kings with his writings instead of their armies -
He never sharpened a pen without conquering a land.
No pen but conquered lands.

At his script, the lance of fortune shook wildly
As you see it, and the Indian sword trembling too.
As you see it, and the Indian blade shuddering.

Then look at the army: you will find the army advancing in order.
Then see the armies receive the armies charging.

And they cannot untie what he has knotted.
They cannot solve what he has tied.

My heart cannot reckon that count.

ياO غائِبينَabsent ones لقدindeed طوَّلْتُمُyou have lengthened الأَمَدَاthe span
O departing ones, you have cut short a hope;
O you whose absence made me wander, the time drags -
O absent ones, you have prolonged the waiting.
O you whose absence was prolonged - how brief your presence!
أَمَاhave you not تَشَوَّقْتُمُlonged for مصرَEgypt الَّتيِwhich شَقِيَتْhas suffered
ولاand not مَلَلْتُمgrown weary مِنof الشَّامِal-Sham الَّذيwhich سَعِداhas been happy
Have you not longed for Egypt, which has suffered,
Have you not yearned for Egypt that suffers your loss?
And have you not tired of al-Sham, which has been happy?
Have you not wearied of fortunate Syria?
ياO مالِكَpossessor of النَّفْسthe soul لِمْwhy صَيَّرْتَهاyou made it هَمَلاًneglected
وآخِذَand taker of الْقَلْبِthe heart لمْwhy لاnot تَأخُذِtake الجَسَدَاthe body
O master of my soul, why have you left it neglected?
O sovereign of my soul, why have you neglected it?
And taker of my heart, why do you not take my body?
O conqueror of my heart, why not take my body?
تركْتَنِيyou left me حائِراًbewildered فيin الدَّارِthe home مُغْتَرِباًa stranger
فيamong الأَهْلِthe family مُستَوحِشاًlonely فيamong الخَلْقِpeople مُنْفَرِداًalone
You left me bewildered, a stranger in my own home,
You left me bewildered, an exile at home,
Lonely among my family, alone among all people.
Lonely among kin, unique among all people.
كمhow often اجتهدتُI strove بِجهديwith all my effort فيto اللَّحاقcatch up بهwith him
وقَدْand indeed أَصَابَwas right ولَوeven if أَخْطَاhe erred مَنwhoever اجْتَهداstrove
How often I strove with all my strength to catch up with him!
How I strove with my utmost to reach him!
And whoever strives has done right, even if he errs.
Whoever strives is right, even if mistaken.

You promised auspicious stars shining upon us -
Among us; one such as you fulfills what he promises.
And one like you fulfills his promises.
