I took the languor of your eyes as a pledge for my heart.

And it is folly enough that afterward I did not say, 'Enough for me!'

Your qualities are sound in every respect:

For your glance makes one waste away—and, if they mispoint the letters, it enchants.

You struck my vitals with a keen sword from your eyes,

And that eyelid's droop comes from that blow.

Take my body from me, now that you have taken its heart,

For there is no good in a body without a heart.

For my longing is closer to my eye than my tears,

And my patience is farther from my side than my bed is.

And were it not for you, I would not have handed passion

My reins, nor surrendered the lead to love.

And a woman with drunkenly swaying flanks, a companion of youth,

Kills by absence and revives by nearness.

    وَكَمْ مدَّ ظلاَّ فوقَه الظِّلُّ كالحُجْبِ

    Hers is a rose of a cheek, whose thorns are an eye's lashes;

And how often the shade has cast a shadow over it like veils.

I was alone with her; then we parted, and there had been nothing

But a draught from a cool, sweet mouth.

With that I answered chastity's call; and often

The lover's ear has feigned deafness to reason's prohibitions.

And if my sin against the fair one was my chastity,

Then may she neither accept my excuse nor forgive my sin.
