أَلومُI blame نَفْسِيmyself علىfor هذاthis العتابِreproach وماand not
تكلَّمspoke الحرُّthe noble man إِلاَّexcept وهْوَwhile he is مَكْلُومُwounded
I blame myself for this reproach; yet never
I blame myself for this reproach, though
does a noble man speak unless he is wounded.
No free man speaks except while blamed
لأَصْبرنَّI shall surely endure علىin the face of ماwhat قدindeed مُنِيتُI have been afflicted بهwith it
فالدَّهرُfor fortune يومانِtwo days محمودٌpraised ومذْمُومُand blamed
I shall surely endure what I have been afflicted with,
I will be patient with what has come to pass
For fortune has two days: one praised, one blamed.
For time has days, praised and condemned
وأُصْبِحَنَّand I shall surely become وليwhile I have نَفْسٌa soul بِعزَّتهاby its dignity
مخطومةُbridled وفَمٌand a mouth بِالصَّمْتِwith silence مَخْتُومُsealed
And I shall surely have a soul whose dignity
And I will face the morn, my soul still proud
bridles it, and a mouth sealed with silence.
Though lip is sealed, and freedom doomed
لاnot أَسْتزيدُكI ask you for more فيماin what قدindeed مُنِيتُI have been afflicted بهwith it
ولاand not أَسومُكَI impose on you أَمراًa matter فيهin it تَغْرِيمُexpense
I ask you for no more amid what I have suffered,
I'll not reproach what you have brought on me
Nor do I impose on you anything that entails expense.
Nor blame you acts for which you are condemned
ولاand not أَلومُكI blame you فيfor برٍّkindness تقدِّمُهyou offer it
فللمَقاديرِfor fate's decrees have تحليلٌpermission وتَحْريمُand prohibition
Nor do I reproach you for kindness you offer;
Nor blame you where you've done a kindness
For fate's decrees permit and forbid.
Fate's threads are rightly woven and hemmed
فَقَدْfor indeed بَسَطْتُI have set forth لِذَاكَfor that الفَعْلِdeed مَعْذِرةًan excuse
لماwhen تيقَّنتُI became certain أَنَّthat الرزقَsustenance مَقْسُومُallotted
For I have offered an excuse for that deed,
For that deed I made excuses, when
When I became certain that sustenance is allotted.
I knew our bread by fate is apportioned
لكنَّهاbut it is نَفْثةُan exhalation المصدورone with an ailing chest جَادَgave freely بهاwith it
فَتىa young man منby الدّهرfortune مَصْدُوعٌshattered ومَصْدُومُand battered
But it is a breath from an ailing breast, given freely
Yet it was but the outburst of a soul
By a young man shattered and battered by fortune.
Wounded by fate, and broken, sundered
عَادَانِيَwas hostile to me الدّهرُfortune لماwhen رَاعَهalarmed it أَدَبيmy learning
وسرَّand the secret يومٌa day عظيمٌmighty فيهwithin it مَكْتُومُhidden
Fortune turned against me when my learning alarmed it,
Fate turned against me, so offended
And the secret of a mighty day is hidden within it.
By my manners - a grave secret loomed
وماand not يُصادِفُit encounters منيin me غَيرَother than مُصْطَبِرٍone who endures
لَهُhe has علىover النَّفسthe soul تخييرٌpower to choose وتَحْكيمُand authority to judge
And it finds in me only one who endures,
None who meets me, if not patient,
Who has the power to choose and rule over his soul.
Has o'er himself choice and arbitration
للْبُلْهfor fools منهfrom it مبرَّاتٌfavors وتكرمةٌand honor
وللحَمِيرand for asses مسرَّاتٌpleasures وتَنْعِيمُand pampering
Fools receive from it favors and honor,
To the foolish come comforts and favors
And asses receive pleasures and pampering.
To the asses, delights and blessings
فإِنْso if كَسَاهُمْit clothes them وعرَّانيand strips me bare فلاthen no عَجَباًwonder
القِرْدُthe monkey يَضْحكlaughs والضِّرغَامُand the lion مَهْمُومُcareworn
So if it clothes them and strips me bare, no wonder:
If it clothes them and strips me bare, no wonder
The monkey laughs, while the lion is careworn.
The ape laughs while the baboon is gloomy
وربماand perhaps عاشَlived هذاthis one جائعاًhungry أَبداًforever
وفازand gained بالرِّيِّwith thirst quenched بعدafter الشِبْعsatiety عُلْجُومُa large frog
And this one may live forever hungry,
One may live ever starved and famished
While a large frog drinks its fill after eating its fill.
While the glutton grows fat and bloated
هذيthese أَساطيرُfables قدindeed سَطَّرتُهاI wrote them down سَقَماًin sickness
فهلso, have...? علمتمyou all learned بأَنof the fact that الفِكْرَthought مَحْمُومُfevered
These are fables I have written down in sickness;
These tales I've penned, fevered and aching
So have you learned that thought is fevered?
For the thoughts of man are ever troubled
