هاجَرنيhe forsook me منone whose هَجْرُهhis desertion هُجْنهْa disgrace
وقالand he said لاno صلحَpeace ولاand no هُدْنهْtruce
He whose desertion is a disgrace forsook me,
His abandonment exiled me, away
And said, “No peace and no truce.”
He said no peace, no truce, today
وقامتand arose الحربُwar فكمso much فتنهْstrife
أَقامهاhe stirred it up مَنْone whose وَجْهُهhis face فِتْنهtemptation
And war broke out—how much strife
So war arose, what trials held sway!
Was stirred up by him whose face is temptation!
Incited by that tempting fey visage
فلمso did not تزلcease كأْسِيmy cup بأَخلاقِهupon his character
أَوْuntil صَيَّرتْهَاit made it رَطْبَةًmoist لَدْنَهpliant
So my cup kept working on his character,
My cup still mirrors his character
Until it made it moist and pliant.
Or turns it to a draught so tender
وقادَهُand it led him السُّكْرintoxication فياso, oh مِنَّةًa boon
للسُّكْرِfrom intoxication لاnot تُشْبِهُهاresembles it مِنَّهْa boon
And intoxication led him—oh, what a boon
Drunk, he was led, what graciousness!
From intoxication, matched by no other boon!
No other drunkenness compares, I say

And it made union easy, although
He made union seem so simple, aye,
It had already baffled humankind and the jinn.
Though once the jinn and men did stray

And after this, know that I
And after this, let all now witness,
Reached Paradise through fire.
I’ve reached through fire, paradise’s bliss
