أَتى زائراً مستخفياً من رقِيبِه

أَتى زائراً مستخفياً من رقِيبِه

ومُسْتَتِراً عنْهُ بغايَةِ جَهْدِهِ

ومُسْتَتِراً عنْهُ بغايَةِ جَهْدِهِ

He came to visit, hiding from his watcher,

He came as a stealthy visitor from his watcher

and concealing himself from him with all his might.

And hiding from him with utmost effort

فمِنْ وَلَهِي قَبَّلتُه وعضَضْتُه

فمِنْ وَلَهِي قَبَّلتُه وعضَضْتُه

فنمَّتْ عليه عضَّةٌ فوق خَدِّه

فنمَّتْ عليه عضَّةٌ فوق خَدِّه

So, in my lovestruck ardor, I kissed him and bit him;

So out of passion I kissed him and bit him

then a bite-mark upon his cheek gave him away.

Leaving a bite mark above his cheek

وعاقبَني بعد الوِصَال بهجرِه

وعاقبَني بعد الوِصَال بهجرِه

وأَعقَبَني بعد الدُّنوِّ بِبُعْدِه

وأَعقَبَني بعد الدُّنوِّ بِبُعْدِه

And after our union, he punished me by abandoning me,

And he punished me after the union with his estrangement

and after closeness, he left me with his distance.

And followed the intimacy with his distance

فيا ليتني لا ذقتُ ساعَةَ وَصْلِه

فيا ليتني لا ذقتُ ساعَةَ وَصْلِه

إِذا كنتُ أَلْقَى بعدهَا عامَ صَدِّه

إِذا كنتُ أَلْقَى بعدهَا عامَ صَدِّه

Ah, if only I had never tasted an hour of union with him,

Oh how I wish I never tasted the hour of his company

if afterward I was to face a year of his rejection.
