A gazelle in Egypt—because of him I forgot

the embrace of the gazelles of Iraq.

And I sipped the wine of his saliva,

and found it sweet to taste.

So when he comes to me unadorned,

I adorn him with pearls from the corners of my eyes.

    And when his figure bends,

then I am set straight by the embrace.

How lovely my days with him—

if only my days would last!

By God, O moon of humankind,

who singled out your waist for waning?

And why is the thread of your character coarse,

when your contours are so delicate?

How often they reproach me for my abandon

in union with you, and my outpouring!

And the cure for what is longed

for by the soul is to hasten parting.
