لَكَfor you العُذرُthe excuse إِنif لَمnot أُعِدI repeat زَورَةًa visit

وَلَوand even if قيلَit were said أَحسَنَhe did well ثُمَّthen اِعتَذَرhe apologized
Yours is the excuse if I do not visit again,
even if it is said, “He did well, then apologized.”
عَلِمتُI knew بِأَنِّيَthat I جُلمودُa boulder صَخرٍof rock
فَلَوso if أَنَّنيthat I عُدتُI returned قالواthey would say مِكَرّone who returns to the charge
I knew that I was a boulder of rock;
so if I returned, they would call me “one who returns to the charge.”

إِلىto قَدَميmy foot مِنfrom لِسانيmy tongue حَصَرspeechlessness
May I be your ransom! I am indeed a man in whom has crept
from my tongue to my foot a faltering.
لَئِنif indeed مَسَّhas touched جِسمَكَyour body حَرُّthe heat الضَنىof wasting sickness
وَلَوَّحَand scorched ذاكَthat المُحَيّاthe face الأَغَرّradiant
If indeed the heat of wasting sickness has touched your body,
and scorched that radiant face,
فَماso ... is not الحَرُّheat فيin الشَمسِthe sun مُستَغرَبٌstrange
وَلاand no عَجَبٌwonder لِشُحوبِat the pallor of القَمَرthe moon
heat in the sun is nothing strange,
nor is the moon’s pallor any wonder.

وَمُشبِهُكَand your counterpart المَشرَفِيُّthe Mashrafi sword الذَكَرkeen
And how often your brother, pure gold, has tasted embers,
and your counterpart, the keen Mashrafi sword.
تَطَلَّعتَyou appeared كَالصَحوِlike clear weather بَعدَafter الغُيومِthe clouds
وَأَمسَكتَand you held back مِثلَlike اِمتِساكِthe withholding المَطَرof the rain
You appeared like clear weather after clouds,
and held back as the rain holds back.
حَديثُthe account العُلىof glory عَنكَabout you مُستَحسَنٌpleasing
حَديثٌa tale إِذاwhen أَمتَعَit delights النَفسَthe soul سَرّit gladdens
Glory’s account of you is pleasing—
a tale that gladdens whenever it delights the soul.
تَحَقَّقَproved true قَولُكَyour word وَالفَصلُand decisive judgment فيهِis in it
فَصَحَّso proved true العِيانُdirect observation وَصَحَّand proved true الخَبَرthe report
Your word proved true, and in it lies decisive judgment;
so what was seen proved true, and what was reported proved true.
وَكَمand many a باطِلٍfalsehood ذائِعٍwidespread قَيَّضَتbrought about

And many a widespread falsehood has had
its fabrications brought forth by other absurdities.
وَكَمand how often أَنبَتَhas made sprout الشِعرَpoetry وَردُthe roses الخُدودِof cheeks
وَسَلَّand unsheathed عَلَيهاagainst them سُيوفَthe swords الحَوَرthe eyes’ vivid black-and-white contrast
And how often the roses of cheeks have made poetry sprout,
and drawn against them the swords of dark-eyed beauty!
