ضَمانٌa liability عَلىupon عَينَيكَyour two eyes أَنِّيَthat I عانِa captive
صَرَفتُI turned إِلىto أَيديthe hands of العَناءِtorment عِنانيmy reins
Your eyes must answer for my captivity;
My eyes guarantee that I have handed over my reins to the hands of ordeal
I have turned my reins over to the hands of torment.
Though I hoped to attain the bliss of union, an elusive prize
وَقَدand indeed كُنتُI was أَرجوI hope الوَصلَunion نَيلَthe attainment of غَنيمَةٍa prize
فَحَسبِيَso enough for me فيهِin it اليَومَtoday نَيلُthe attainment of أَمانِsafety
And I had hoped to win a prize through union;
For me today, attaining safety is enough
but today, gaining safety in it is enough for me.
If only I had obeyed my whim and desire, I would not have squeezed my eyelids and thus squeezed my soul
أَطَعتُI obeyed هَوىthe desire of طَرفيmy gaze لِحَتفيto my doom لَوif أَنَّيthat I
غَضَضتُI lowered جُفونيmy eyelids ماnot عَضَضتُI bit بَنانيmy fingertips
I obeyed my gaze's desire, to my doom; had I
Who can I complain to of a body that I resent, or a fluttering heart that I lament?
lowered my eyelids, I would not have bitten my fingertips.
I have lived until now only because
وَمَنand who ليfor me بِجِسمٍwith a body أَشتَكيI complain مِنهُof it بِالضَنىof wasting sickness
وَقَلبٍand a heart فَأَشكوso I complain مِنهُof it بِالخَفَقانِof palpitations
And who will give me a body whose wasting I may lament,
I was hidden, so the pigeons did not know my whereabouts
and a heart whose palpitations I may lament?
Had my life been as long as Noah's, and I bartered it
وَماand not عِشتُI have lived حَتّىuntil الآنَnow إِلّاexcept لِأَنَّنيbecause I
خَفيتُI became hidden فَلَمso did not يَدرِknow الحِمامُDeath مَكانيmy whereabouts
And I have lived until now only because
For an hour's union with you, I would have said “that's enough for me!"
I vanished from sight, so Death did not know my whereabouts.
The water of your lips is no dearer to me
وَلَوand even if أَنَّthat عُمريmy lifetime عُمرُthe lifetime of نوحٍNoah وَبِعتُهُand I sold it
بِساعَةِfor an hour of وَصلٍunion مِنكَfrom you قُلتُI said كَفانيit sufficed me
And even if my lifetime were Noah's lifetime, and I sold it
Than the water of my youth and the arrival of my time
for an hour of union with you, I would say, 'That suffices me.'
When despair whispers to the soul about you gently,
وَماand not ماءُthe moisture of ذاكَthat الثَغرِmouth عِنديto me غالِياًcostly
بِماءِfor the freshness of شَبابيmy youth وَاِقتِبالِand the prime of زَمانيmy days
Nor is the moisture of that mouth too dear to me,
My hopes respond with “maybe” and “perhaps”
at the price of my youth's freshness and the prime of my days.
My two friends, I am ignorant of passion, so question me
إِذاwhen اليَأسُdespair ناجىwhispered to النَفسَthe soul مِنكَof you بِلَنwith 'will not' وَلاand 'no'
أَجابَتreplied ظُنونيmy thoughts رُبَّماperhaps وَعَسانيand perhaps I may
When despair whispers to the soul about you, 'Never' and 'No,'
Take the number of those who died of love from the beginning
my thoughts reply, 'Perhaps' and 'Maybe I shall.'
If I am the only one, consider me the second
خَليلَيَّmy two friends عِنديI have لِلسُلُوِّfor forgetting love بَلادَةٌineptitude
فَإِنso if شِئتُماyou two wish عِلمَknowledge of الهَوىlove فَسَلانيthen ask me, both of you
My two friends, I am inept at forgetting love;
If someone asks, where can I find a lover?
so if you wish for knowledge of love, ask me.
I imagined him to be unique among all people, having handed over my reins
خُذاtake, both of you عَدَداًa count مَنthose who ماتَdied مِنsince أَوَّلِthe beginning of الهَوىlove
فَإِنso if كانَit was فَرداًone فَاِحسُبانيthen count me, both of you ثانيsecond
You two, count those who have died since love began;
Moses' wet nurses and Samia's union are similar in their taboo, both equivocal
and if there was just one, count me as the second.
I say this though my wakefulness with his mention has lasted long
فَإِنso if قالَsaid شَخصٌsomeone أَينَwhere أَعشَقُmost in love عاشِقٍa lover
تَخَيَّلتُهُI imagined him دونَapart from الأَنامِhumankind عَنانيhe meant me
And if someone says, 'Where is the most ardent lover?'
The eagle of grey hairs has tired from flying
I would fancy he meant me alone among mankind.
Lightning flickers as if it were the sword of a brave knight
مَراضِعُthe wet nurses of موسىMoses أَوor وِصالُunion with سَمِيَّهِhis namesake
نَظيرانِtwo counterparts فيin التَحريمِprohibition يَشتَبِهانِthey resemble each other
The wet nurses of Moses, or union with his namesake,
Or the heart of a coward, slicing through the black night's mourning raiment
are two counterparts, alike in being forbidden.
Or his coat of mail with its blades
أَقولُI say وَقَدand already طالَgrew long السُهادُsleeplessness بِذِكرِهِin remembering him
وَقَدand already كَلَّgrew weary نَسرُthe eagle of الشُهبِthe stars بِالطَيَرانِfrom flying
I say, while sleeplessness has lengthened in remembering him,
He appeared before my eyes in glimpses, and I wished for him
and the eagle of the stars has grown weary of flight,
Then he rained on me from my eyelashes and quenched my thirst
وَقَدand already خَفَقَfluttered البَرقُthe lightning الطَروبُrapturous كَأَنَّهُas though it were
حُسامُa sword of شُجاعٍa brave man أَوor فُؤادُthe heart of جَبانِa coward
and the rapturous lightning has fluttered as though it were
He gestured to me in greeting - had the lightning called me a lover before him, it would have invited me
a brave man's sword or a coward's heart:
I spend the night sleepless, slain by my passions, my only bedmate is my copious red tears
يَشُقُّit rends حِدادَthe mourning garb of اللَيلِthe night مِنهُfrom it بِراحَةٍwith a palm
مُخَضَّبَةٍhenna-dyed أَوor دِرعَهُits armor بِسِنانِwith a spearhead
it rends night's mourning robes with a palm of its own,
The stars of night around me are like mourning gatherings
henna-dyed—or rends night's armor with a spearhead.
With me among them grieving like the raven of darkness
تَراءىit appeared لِعَينيto my eye خُلَّباًrainless وَاِنتَجَعتُهُand I sought its rain
فَأَمطَرَنيso it rained upon me مِنfrom مُقلَتيmy eye وَسَقانيand gave me drink
It appeared to my eye as rainless lightning, and I sought its rain;
I bowed to the earth in his memory, so if he appears from nearby, imagine how you will find me!
so it rained upon me from my own eye and gave me drink.
أَشارَit gestured تِجاهيtoward me بِالسَلامِwith a greeting فَلَوso if دَعاit called
بِهاwith it البَرقُthe lightning قَبليbefore me عاشِقاًa lover لَدَعانيit would have called me
It gestured toward me in greeting; and had
the lightning called a lover with it before me, it would have called me.
فَبِتُّso I spent the night بِأَشواقيby my longings قَتيلاًslain وَإِنَّماand only
نَجيعِيَmy gore دَمعيmy tears فاضَflowed أَحمَرَred قانِdeep crimson
So I spent the night slain by my longings, though
my gore was only my tears, flowing red, deep crimson.
كَأَنَّas though نُجومَthe stars of اللَيلِthe night حَوليaround me مَآتِمٌmourning gatherings
غُرابُthe raven of الدُجىdarkness ماin the space بَينَهُنَّbetween them نَعانيannounced my death
As though the stars of night around me were mourning gatherings,
the raven of darkness among them announced my death.
خَرَرتُI fell down لِذِكراهُat the remembrance of him عَلىupon التُربِthe dust ساجِداًprostrate
فَإِنso if لاحَhe appeared مِنfrom قُربٍnearby فَكَيفَthen how تَرانيyou see me
I fell prostrate upon the dust at the thought of him;
so if he appeared close by, how would you see me then?
