Your arrival erased from us fear and poverty,

And illuminated the two coal-black things: injustice and darkness.

And filled peace with security, and battle with death,

And the horizon with light, and the precincts of glory with generosity.

Indeed, your resolve is a sword that never loses

Its edge, even when a sword's edge is blunted or shattered.

And if your superior judgment hurled a sudden stroke

Of its resolve at Dhu al-Qarnayn's barrier, the barrier would crumble.

You readied for time plans that strike sparks, and a hand

That casts arrowheads which mankind calls lofty ambitions.

Does any visitation come from time, with victory leading it,

Without your bold advance having gone before it?

You came in mail upon your swift steed, wearing

    A keen blade, like its bearer if it were granted understanding;

Like the sea within a river, above a torrent, girded

With a rivulet that has quenched every thirst amid idolatry.

The chain mail strained as it enclosed you, covering

One whose breast no calamity constricted, however great.

God be praised for you, Abu Uthman, earning

Sweet reward through bitter endurance, winning spoils.

A bold warrior who counts the cool of shade as noonday heat,

Until he is seen with his face wrapped in dust's veil.

Bright swords are his boon companions, and deserts his gathering-place.

And if he wishes to lower a shield, he lets it hang as a banner.

His sword is generosity's rival wife within him, for

The full moon and the lion have been divided between them.

Were a fair woman to demand too much of a bright blade,

His slender beauties would battle his cleaving swords.

And sometimes he kisses both mouths, sipping

Two salivas: this one called gore, and that one blood.

    أَو عَنَّ مِعطَفُ هَذا يَحنِهِ لَهُما

    If he sways this one's curving form, it does not bend him toward them both;

Or if this one's curved flank appears, it bends him toward them both.

He sees blood as wine, and sword-edges as flowers,

So war is wine and sweet basil, as he claims.

He duels with the brave man, leaving his armor as a shroud,

And strikes his rival, turning his saddle into a board for meat.

One who drives the horses forward while souls retreat,

And makes victory laugh as swords weep blood.

And one whose sword harvests blows, which he regards

As a crown with which battle's hair-parting has been branded.

He journeyed by night like a secret of love, while night concealed him

As a breast; then the bright blades' plaintive cry revealed what it hid.

The sword is forbidden to return to its dwelling

Until he brings the womenfolk back to his native lands.

If he wished, he would speak, and his speech would not falter,

Like thunder rolling and roaring across the horizons.

For he is fate, veiled from understanding,

And no verdict of his is reversed when he passes judgment.

O house of Asfar, suppose you are sparks of battle:

    This sun extinguishes that blaze.

This is Sulayman, exalted in kingship and piety,

And you are the jinn, so become his servants.

You are earth, and he is God's horizon, so await

Thunderbolts from him if you are ungrateful for the steady rains.

A king toward whose radiant brow noble virtues point

A hand, and make a mouth utter beautiful praise.

Wide is his reach in guidance and valor; eloquent of tongue,

He exhausts battalions, wealth, and words.

If praise were to swear of him that he is an angel,
