لِصَبِّto a yearning lover مُبيدdeadly
The gazelles' eye—its cruelty
The gazelle's eye, slain
is deadly to a yearning lover.
By a lethal arrow—
أَرسَلَتit sent forth تُسَدِّدُaiming لِلساليat the carefree one
سَهمَهاits arrow السَديدunerring
It loosed, aiming at the carefree one,
She aimed it true at the hunter
its unerring arrow.
And let the arrow fly.

غُصنُbranch قَدِّهhis figure
The bejeweled charmer—the full moon was the fruit
The radiant one with the necklace gave birth to a full moon,
of the branch of his figure.
A branch of his neck.
وَمُذand since جَهِلَacted foolishly جَعَلَmade الهَجراestrangement
بَعضَpart وَعدِهhis promise
And since he acted foolishly, he made estrangement
Yet since he was ignorant he made estrangement
part of his promise.
Some of his promise.

Can one reach him through verse, while Sirius
Can he attain with poetry and verse
is above his cheek?
Above his forehead?

How can he pluck the stars
by one upon the ground?
He who is on the ground?

My hopes have gone, by your life,
For your life, my hopes have gone
along a distant path.
On a distant course.

You have reached, Musa, in estrangement,
You have reached with estrangement, Moses,
every sought-for end.
Every goal.

If you cleft my tears across the land,
If you had split my tears over innocence
no dry ground would remain.
It would not have dried.

Leave Mount Sinai aside; in my breast
Instill Mount Sinai in my breast
is a firebrand of love.
For love, a spark.

You ask for sorrows, so I give them—
It seeks sorrows, so I give it
more than you desire.
More than it wants.

Did my torment strike before me
a sensible lover?
A reasonable lover?

How often you greet the lover who visits
How you meet the passionate visitor
by turning away from him!
With bolts!

Arrogance and excuses will be abrogated
Soon the excuses and confusion
by the sign of down along your cheeks.
Will undo the excuse.

Indeed, the mole's blackness is like a warning;
Indeed the mole's dot is like a warning—
wait expectantly.
Be on guard.

The breeze of hopes stirred his longing; within them
The breeze of wishes turned her
is their auspicious star.
Happy star toward it.

How many a carefree man that mole
How much that mole has of moles—
has made lovesick!
Its pillar rebutted it.

I swear by your estrangement and gray hair
where this oath is sworn—
Wherever it may be.

Your love, O temptation,
firmly lodged within my breast,
Was not rooted in shame.

Were it not for your life being my paradise
and your love my faith.

Revive a soul in which you are
I would revive a love in which
the originator, the restorer.
You were creator and restorer.

If you gained from your precious union
the martyr's paradise!
The martyr’s paradise,

Say to the seller of perfume in the shop:
Say to the perfume seller in his shop
Is there any fragrance but you?
Is there any but you as perfume?

If the neighbors suspected

I shall put an end, through humiliation,
I will settle with disgrace
to the suspicion of the one nearby.
The accusation of kin.

We open the perfume in that quarter
I will open perfume in that body—
to whoever wants it.
Let whoever wants have access.

It seems to me that the watcher is worn out,
I feel that the watchman is indifferent to me
and the shop is new.
And the shop is new.
