Take it as two intoxicants, from a glance and a cup,

    Between two gardens—sidelock and myrtle.

Do not spur the steeds of desire, for the garden is clad.

And the day is sweet of temper,

And the river among the groves

    Is like a polished sword

    Between green sword-belts.

Beauty is reserved for describing al-Talabi:

A guilty glance beside an innocent cheek,

And a tawny complexion that shamed the evening sun.

So turn away from Babylon's magic.

Have you ever known an archer

    Whose arrow defies belief—

The vital spots yearn for it?

My night, for you, is day through sleeplessness.

I spend the night bedded on tragacanth thorns,

My tears unloosed, my heart held captive.

And a care within me shuts out reproach.

Do the reproaching women not know

    That the reproacher's counsel

Is wind to the fire of anguish?

An eyelid shows you a sword of Indian steel:

It slew and revived; so India's blood is feeble.

I sang to him, seeking from him my safety:

If you have come asking for safety,

Then I have means of reaching you.

    You are ailing like me,

And like reaches out to like.
