ياO مُرهِبيyou who terrify me دونَwithout سُلطانٍpower يَصولُhe assails بِهِwith it
وَمُخجِليand you who shame me دونَwithout ذَنبٍa sin لاno وَلاnor زَلَلِa slip
O you who terrify me without power to assail me,
O you who terrorize without power raging in you,
And shame me without a sin—no, nor a slip—
And dishonor me without fault, no, never once,
إِلّاexcept هَوىًlove رَدَّset aside حَقّيmy right عِندَbefore باطِلِهِhis falsehood
حَتّىuntil يَرىregards الظُلمُinjustice ليto me مِنهُfrom him يَداًa favor قِبَليtoward me
Save a love that set aside my right before his falsehood,
Except for passion that made my right seem wrong in his eyes
Until injustice itself regards his treatment of me as a favor toward me.
Until oppression looks to me from him as a helpful hand extended to me
إِنif جُدتَyou give generously ليto me فَبِحَقٍّthen by right أَوor بَخِلتَyou withhold فَماthen not
أَكونُI shall be أَوَّلَthe first صَبٍّlovesick lover ماتَdied عَنleaving behind أَمَلِhope
If you give generously to me, it is my due; or if you withhold, I shall not
Whether you are generous or stingy does not matter
Be the first lovesick lover to die with hope unfulfilled.
For I will not be the first love-sick youth to die of hopelessness
مَتىwhen تَرىwill see مِنكَfrom you نَفسيmy soul ماwhat تُؤَمِّلُهُhopes for it
وَحاجَتيand my need فيكَfor you بَينَbetween اليَأسِdespair وَالأَمَلِand hope
When will my soul see from you what it hopes for,
When will I see in you what my soul hopes for
While my need for you lies between despair and hope?
And my need in you between despair and hope
