ياسالِبَO stealer of القَلبِthe heart مِنّيfrom me عِندَماwhen رَمَقاglanced
لَمdid not يُبقِleave حُبُّكَyour love ليfor me صَبراًpatience وَلاnor رَمَقاa breath of life
O you who stole my heart from me when you glanced!
Your love has left me neither patience nor a breath of life.
لاdo not تَسأَلِask اليَومَtoday عَمّاabout what كابَدَتendured كَبِديmy liver
لَيتَif only الفِراقَparting وَلَيتَand if only الحُبَّlove ماnot خُلِقاwere both created
Do not ask today what my liver has endured.
Would that parting—and would that love—had never been created!
ماnot بِاِختِيارِيَby my own choice ذُقتُI tasted الحُبَّlove ثانِيَةًa second time
وَإِنَّماbut rather جَرَتِran their course الأَقدارُthe decrees of fate فاِتَّفَقاand so it happened
Not by my own choice did I taste love a second time;
Rather, fate ran its course, and so it came to pass.
وَكُنتُand I was فيin كَلَفيmy passion الداعيthat calls إِلىto تَلَفيmy ruin
مِثلَlike الفَراشِa moth أَحَبَّloved النارَthe fire فَاِحتَرَقاand so burned
And in my passion, which called me to my ruin, I was
Like a moth that loved the fire and burned.
اِرفِقbe gentle عَلَيَّwith me فَإِنَّfor indeed النَفسَthe soul قَدalready تَلَفَتperished
وَاِنظُرand look إِلَيَّat me فَإِنَّfor indeed الروحَthe spirit قَدalready زُهِقاwas extinguished
Be gentle with me, for my soul has already perished.
And look upon me, for my spirit has already been extinguished.
