O Musa, you have indeed led me to the worst watering place.
Oh Musa, you have led me to the worst plight,
And Pharaoh is not ungrateful for favors.
And Pharaoh is not so ungrateful.

You bewitched my heart when you sent forth the serpent of the
You captivated my heart when you sent the serpent
down on your cheek, and you have drowned me in my tears.
Of accusation, and drowned me in my tears.

And I had not feared that my death would come
I did not fear that my end would be
at your hands—and the days are full of wonders.
At your hands, though days can be deceptive.
وَوَاللَهِand by God ماnot يَلتَذُّtakes delight سَمعيmy hearing وَناظِريand my eye

And by God, my hearing and my eye take no delight
By God, neither my hearing nor sight
in any person but you, yet that does me no good.
Takes pleasure in anyone but you - that is of no use to me.
جَعَلتَyou made عَلَيَّupon me الصَبرَpatience ضَربَةَan imposition لازِبٍinescapable

You have made patience an inescapable duty for me,
You made patience upon me an unsheathed blade
and forbidden me to come to you with an intercessor.
And forbade that I should come to you with an intercessor.

And my sorrow is not that I die, but only
I do not grieve that I die; rather
my fear that you may be accused of baseness of character.
My fear is that you cast me into the pit of natures.
