طَلِيقُunfettered دُمُوعِيmy tears فيin الغَرَامِpassionate love مُسَلسَلُchained
وَآخِرُand the end of وَجدِيmy longing فِيin المَحَبَّةِlove أوَّلُa beginning
My unfettered tears are chained in passion;
And the end of my longing in love is a beginning.
أيَاO قَمَراًmoon أمسَىhas become عَنِaway from العَينِthe eye آفِلاًsetting
وَلَيسَand there is no لَهُfor him إلاَّexcept فُؤَاديmy heart مَنزِلُdwelling
O moon that has now set beyond sight,
And has no dwelling but my heart;
وَغُصنَand O branch of نَقاًa sand dune اضحَىhas become لَدَيَّwith me مُعَزَّزاًcherished
وَعُنقُودُand the cluster of جَعِcurly (text defective) الشَّعرِhair مِنهُof him مُدَلَّلُpampered
And O branch upon a dune, now cherished at my side,
And the cluster of his curling hair is pampered;
وَسُلطَانَand O sovereign of حُسنٍbeauty ظَلَّcontinued to نَاظِرُthe overseer of طَرفِهِhis eye
وَعَامِلُand the governor of خَدَّيهِhis two cheeks يَجُورُacts unjustly وَيَعدِلُand acts justly
And O sovereign of beauty, whose eye's overseer
And cheeks' governor still rule unjustly and justly.
عَجِبتُI marveled لِخَدّat a cheek مِنكَof yours أصبحَbecame وَالِياًa governor
وَلَحظُكَwhile your glance لَمnot يَبرَحcease مَدَىthroughout الدَّهرall time يَعزِلُdismisses from office
I marvel at a cheek of yours that has become a governor,
While your glance has never ceased, through all time, to depose.
وَأعجَبُand more astonishing مِنthan ذَاthis أنَّنِيthat I لَكَfor you ظَامِىءٌthirsty
وَمُنهَلُّwhile the outpouring of دَمعِيmy tears لِلرَّكَائِبِfor riding camels مَنهَلُa watering place
And stranger still is that I thirst for you,
While my streaming tears are a watering place for riding camels.
رَعَىmay protect اللهُGod مَنthe one whom أهوَىI love فَكَمfor how often ذاindeed (emphatic) يَلومُنيblame me
وُشَاةٌslanderers وَحُسَّادٌand enviers عَلَيهِon his account وَعُذَّلُand reproachers
May God guard the one I love! How often I am blamed
For him by slanderers, enviers, and reproachers.
فَلَوso if فَصَلُواthey cut apart جَِسمِيmy body لأسلُوso I might forget جَمَالَهُhis beauty
صَبَرتُI would endure لأنَّbecause الصَّبرَpatience للِصَّبّfor the lovesick lover أجمَلُmore becoming
So, were they to cut my body apart to make me forget his beauty,
I would endure, for patience is more becoming to the lovesick.
قَضِيبٌa slender branch إذاwhen أهوَىhe bends down بِعِطفَيهِwith his two flanks عَاملٌpotent
غَزَالٌa gazelle إذَاwhen أومَىhe gestures بِعَينَيهِwith his two eyes أعمَلُmore potent
A slender branch, potent when he sways his flanks;
A gazelle, more potent when he gestures with his eyes.
بِغَيرِby anything other than شَذَاهُhis fragrance مِنfrom جُنُونِيَmy madness لَمdid not أفِقI recover
كَأنَّas though شَذَاهُhis fragrance لِلممَجَانِينِfor the mad مَنزِلُa dwelling
Only through his fragrance have I recovered from my madness,
As though his fragrance were a home for the mad.
وَلَمَّاand when وَفَىhe fulfilled بِالعَهدِthe pledge نَزَّهتُI delighted نَاظِرِيmy gaze
بِرَوضَةِin the garden of خَدَّيهِhis two cheeks وَسِترِيَwhile my curtain مُسبَلُis lowered
And when he kept his pledge, I delighted my gaze
In the garden of his cheeks, with my curtain drawn.
