خَليليmy close friend قمrise لقدindeed صَفَتhas cleared العُقَارُthe wine
وَقَدand already غَنَّىsang علىupon الأيكِthe grove الهَزَارُthe nightingale
My friend, rise—the wine has cleared.
My friend, arise, for the homes have been emptied,
And the nightingale has sung in the grove.
And the reveler has sung to the extinguisher of fires.

أفِقawake ماnot العُمرُlife إلاexcept مُستَعَارُborrowed
How long this lingering in hopes?
How long will you persist in wishes and dreams?
Awake! Life is only borrowed.
Wake up! Life is but a loan.
وَخُذهاand take it مِنfrom يدَيthe two hands of ظبيa gazelle غرِيرِguileless
بِجَفنَيهِin his two eyelids فُتُورٌlanguor وَانكِسَارُand a downcast look
And take it from the hands of a guileless gazelle,
Take her from me, gazelle with elegant neck,
Whose eyelids are languid and downcast.
With languid eyelids and broken pride.
غَزَالٌa gazelle فِيin لَوَاحِظشهِhis glances لُيوثٌlions

A gazelle with lions in his glances,
A gazelle with eyes of a lion in her glances,
And in his cheeks are water and fire.
And in her cheeks water and fire.

When night envelops the drinking companions,
When the night covers the repentant with its gown,
Daylight smiles forth from his front teeth.
Day smiles from between its folds.
يَقُولُsays لِيَto me العَذولُthe reproacher تًَسَلَّforget عنهُabout him
وَماand what عُذرِيmy excuse وَقَدand already نَبَتَsprouted العِذارُthe cheek down
The reproacher tells me, 'Forget him.'
The censurers say to me, “Refrain from it”,
And what excuse have I, now that down has sprouted on his cheeks?
But what is my excuse when vines have sprouted?
فَصَبراًso, patience لِلنَّوَىwith separation بَعدَafter التَّدانِيcloseness
فَلَولاَfor, were it not for الخمرُwine ماnot حُمِدَwas praised الخُمارُthe hangover
So be patient with separation after closeness.
Have patience with the intent after coming close,
For were it not for wine, the hangover would not be praised.
For if not for wine, veils would not be praised.
