How can I heed the two reprovers,

for all my patience with the two reprovers?

    Indeed, amid sorrow my adversary

in loving him is a heart and an eye.

    أَنا صَبٌّ بِشاهِدَين

    I am truthful in love;

I am lovesick, with two witnesses.

    So whenever I seek solace,

a barrier is set between us by those two.

    And I, like Ibn Hani',

in youthful passion, am allied to two intoxications.

My excuse is established by the beauty of the one

whom I love madly, without falsehood:

    a full moon, mounted

on a slender bough of silver.

His face is a garden, and the rain

from it is two honey-sweet drops of saliva.

The beauty of his two basil sprigs has

    doubled in the two gardens.

If he gave me some of his saliva,

it would be an antidote to two scorpions.

    God adorned his cheek,

for my torment, with two beauty spots.

That was so he might gain from

    beauty's nature a double share.

He was singular for this reason:

    beauty held sway twice.

    So each has a mark,

    and he possesses two marks.

How can I fear his being shared,

when he has gained two forms of delicacy?

    He finds nothing obscure,

and reads with two clear proofs.

    And my proof of what

I said is the Holder of the Two Ministries:

an expression for which you cannot find

    two bearers among mankind.

For it singles out one man,

and no other, on the two shores:

    a lord of Quda'a,

the finest exalted scion of two lords.

    Generosity and eminence were acquired

by his person through two inheritances,

    فَهوَ حُسنٌ ذو حُسنَيَين

    from his father and his grandfather;

so he is beauty endowed with two beauties,

    like Basarin among

the forebears of the two luminaries.

If glory sought to rise above him,

they would become, compared with him, two Farqad stars.

    Indeed, I swear by him,

and by the prayer-ground and the two mountain passes:

no one equals him in eminence—

and by him I swear to both claims.

    My refuge, O Abu Ali,

O my hope against every weariness!

I have had enough of what befell me,

    of obscurity and excessive separation,

and of being cast aside for every debt,

and being seized for every debt.

Do not leave me, after such estrangement,

    wishing for Hunayn's two boots.

    You know my innermost self,

without doubt, by name and identity.

And my witness to all that

I claim is the youth of Ru'ayn.
