لَماwould not جَرىhave raced السَيفُthe sword فيin شَأوٍa race مَعَwith القَلَمِthe pen
Were it not for your arbitration between judgment and judge,
Had you not judged between rule and rule,
the sword would not have run a race alongside the pen.
The sword would not have flowed with the pen.
لَكَyours are النَدىgenerosity وَالهُدىand guidance نَجلوwe dispel بِنورِهِماby the light of both
لَيلاًa night مِنَof الجَهلِignorance أَوor لَيلاًa night مِنَof العَدَمِpoverty
Yours are generosity and guidance; by their light we dispel
The dew and the guidance, we are illuminated by their light,
a night of ignorance or a night of poverty.
A night of ignorance, or a night of oblivion.
أَطلَعتَyou brought forth صُبحَthe dawn الهُدىof guidance وَالعَدلِand justice فاِمتَحِقاso both swept away

You raised the dawn of guidance and justice, and both swept away
You brought forth the dawn of guidance and justice, so adhere,
the gloom of the two coal-black ones: injustice and darkness.
To the gloom of oppressors, injustice and gloom.
فاِنهَضso rise بِجِدِّكَwith your resolve فيin حَسمِrooting out الضَلالِerror كَماjust as

So rise with your resolve to root out error, just as
So rise with your dedication to end misguidance, as
radiance crept through darkness, and healing through sickness.
The spear point advanced in the darkness and the innocent in disease.

The sea does not drown in the flood of a mirage, nor
The sea does not drown in the delusion of mirage, nor
do branches of wild lote and acacia detract from the bow-wood tree.
Does the run-off of the lost affect the spring.
لَوif أَنَّthat أَرضاًa land سَعَتhastened شَوقاًin longing لِمُصلِحِهاfor its reformer

If a land could hasten in longing for its reformer,
If a land had expanded in yearning for its reformer,
al-Andalus would come to you, walking on foot.
Andalusia would have come to you walking on foot.

You clad Hims in arms that cannot be blunted, when
You clothed Homs in undefeatable armor, though
hypocrisy had drawn an avenger's sword against her.
Hypocrisy had already drawn its avenging sword against it.

And leave a people who recited what does not benefit them,
And leave a people reciting what does not benefit them,
as though, in doing so, they had devoted themselves to an idol.
As if they were idols in dedication to an idol.
ظَنّواthey supposed الشَقاوَةَmisery فيماin what فيهِin it فَوزُهُمُtheir triumph

They thought misery lay in what held their triumph;
They thought misery was where their success laid,
a coat of mail weighs heavy only to a routed man.
Armor weighs down none but the defeated.
غَرَّتهُمُbeguiled them بَهجَةُthe splendor الآمالِof hopes إِذwhen بَسَمَتthey smiled

The splendor of hopes beguiled them when they smiled;
The delight of hopes deceived them when it smiled,
but does the smile of gray hair among the locks bring joy?
Does the smile of old age please in adversities?
أَضحىhas become أَبوAbu عَمرٍAmr اِبنَson of الجَدِّal-Jadd مُنفَرِداًunmatched

Abu Amr ibn al-Jadd now stands unmatched
Abu Amr the son of dignity became unmatched
among men, like a white blaze among black steeds,
Among the people like a white pearl in coal.
مُحَبَباًbeloved كَالصِباlike youth فيin نَفسِthe soul ذيone with هَرَمٍold age
مُعَظَّماًrevered كَالغِنىlike wealth فيin عَينِthe eye ذيone with عَدَمِpoverty
beloved as youth in an old man's soul,
Beloved like the breeze to one of old age,
revered as wealth in a poor man's eyes.
Revered like wealth in the eye of the penniless.
لَوif شاءَhe wished بِالسَعدِwith good fortune رَدَّwould turn back السَهمَthe arrow فيwith لُطُفٍgentleness

If he wished, with fortune's favor he could gently turn an arrow back
If he willed, he would gently return the arrow after its shooting,
after it had pierced through, and reach a star at close range.
And take back the star from decline.
أَغَرُّradiant يَنظُرُgazes طَرفُthe eye الفَضلِof excellence عَنwith حَوَرٍdark irises against bright whites

Radiant is he: excellence's eye gazes with dark-eyed beauty
How strange, the eye of virtue looks away from him
drawn from him, and glory's nose rises with his proud loftiness.
And the nose of glory turns up from his aroma.
لَوif أَنَّthat لِلبَدرِfor the full moon إِشراقاًradiance كَغُرَّتِهِlike his bright brow

If the full moon had radiance like his brow's,
If the full moon had radiance like his,
none would suspect an eclipse could darken it.
Eclipses over it would not be suspect.

The stars of eminence revolve around him as their beacon,
The stars of ascent revolved around his banner,
and from him pride's fire is kindled on a mountain.
And from it the fire of pride was lit in a banner.
مُوَكَّلٌentrusted بِحُقوقِwith the rights المُلكِof sovereignty يَحفَظُهاhe safeguards them

Entrusted with the rights of sovereignty, he safeguards them
Appointed over the rights of the kingdom, he preserves them
with nobility and diligence, as gratitude safeguards blessings.
With glory and dedication like gratitude preserves bounty.
نامَتslept بِهِthrough him مُقلَةُthe eye التَوحيدِof monotheism آمِنَةًsecure
وَعَينُهُwhile his eye لَمhas not تَذُقtasted غَمضاًa wink وَلَمand has not تَنَمِslept
Through him, the eye of monotheism has slept secure,
The eye of monotheism slept by him safely,
while his own eye has not tasted a wink, nor slept.
His eye did not taste sleepiness nor slept.
تُضحيbecome الرِياضُthe gardens هَشيماًdry stubble إِذwhen تُحارِبُهُthey wage war on him
وَيورِقُand sprouts leaves الصَخرُrock إِنif أَلقىit extends يَدَthe hand السَلَمِof peace
Gardens turn to dry stubble when they wage war on him,
Gardens become devastated when battling him
and rock sprouts leaves if it extends the hand of peace.
And rock blooms if he extends a hand of peace.
حَمىhe protected الهُدىguidance وَأَباحَand made freely available الرِفدَbounty سائِلَهُto its seeker
فَالرِفدُso bounty فيin حَرَبٍplunder وَالدَينُand religion فيin حَرَمِa sanctuary
He protected guidance and made bounty free to its seeker;
He protected the true path and provided for those requesting him,
so bounty is open to plunder, while religion is in a sanctuary.
So plenty is at war and religion in a sanctuary.
فَجودُso the generosity راحَتِهِof his palm رَيٌّthirst-quenching بِلاwithout شَرَقٍchoking
وَضَوءُand the radiance سيرَتِهِof his conduct نورٌlight بِلاwithout ظُلَمِdarkness
So his palm's generosity quenches thirst without choking,
The open-handedness of his comfort is irrigation without horizons,
and his conduct's radiance is light without darkness.
And the light of his conduct is illumination without gloom.
ياO مَنyou who عَلىupon المَدحِpraise شَينٌa blemish فيin سِواهُanyone other than him كَماjust as
يُستَقبَحُis deemed ugly التاجُthe crown مَعقوداًfastened عَلىupon صَنَمِan idol
O you—praise of another is a blemish upon praise, just as
O you who praise is disgraceful compared to him, as
a crown is deemed ugly when fastened upon an idol.
A crown is deemed ugly when placed on an idol.
وَمَنand you whose جَرىflowed نَيلُهُhis bounty بَحراًas a sea فَغاصَso dived بِهِinto it
أَهلُthe masters الثَناءِof praise عَلىfor دُرٍّpearls مِنَof الكَلِمِwords
And you whose bounty flowed as a sea, into which dived
And he whose attainment was an ocean so its people
the masters of praise in search of pearls of speech:
Of praise dived deeply for pearls of words.
لَئِنif indeed هَزَزتُكَI brandished you لِلدَهرِagainst Time الخَؤونِthe treacherous فَماthen not

if I have brandished you against treacherous Time, I have not
If I provoke you during hard times it is not
brandished for war anything but the keen, cleaving sword.
Provocation for war but for the cutting blade.
وَإِنand if جَنَيتُI reaped بِكَthrough you التَرفيهِease مِنfrom شَظَفٍhardship
فَرُبَّthen many a مَغفِرَةٍpardon تُنجيsaves مِنَfrom النَدَمِregret
And if through you I have reaped ease from hardship,
And if I obtain from you amusement from adversity
then many a pardon saves one from regret.
Then many a forgiveness saves from regret.
