    كُلَّ النُّجُومِ التَّي مَثنَى وَمُنفَرِدِ

    Ask about my sleeplessness, my illness, and my endurance,

    all the stars, those in pairs and those alone;

    and about the sorrows and pain I suffer

    from my heart's throbbing—here is my hand upon my liver.

    مِن فَرطِ سُقمِيَ لم يبقَ مَعِي جَسَدِي

    You listen to my moaning, yet you do not see my form;

    so severe is my illness that my body no longer remains with me.

    حَسبِي أذَاهَا لَقَد وَضَعتُهَا بِيَدِي

    I have a blazing ember in the depths of my breast;

    its torment is enough for me—I placed it there with my own hand.

    O pinnacle of beauty, care for one in pain, gravely ill,

    grown thin as a hidden strand of your curly hair.

    And how many other nights of passion for you,

    until I had visions of ghouls and lions.

    And how many nights, while the fire of longing burns me,

    it may pour out tears; the ache of inflamed eyes overwhelms me.

    In the lips' dusky hue I find the mouth's intoxication above pearls,

    resembling wine, limpid water, and sugar.
