An ailing man, stirred to longing by a languid breath—

so a miserly hope grew lavish with his tears.

He marshalled patience as an army against longing,

but it retreated when the east wind advanced.

And it made me weep, so my tears drenched the wind

at midmorning; hence it was called 'the moist breeze.'

And how many a polished cheek at al-Khayf

a keen, polished blade forbids one to kiss!

    يُجيبُ أَنينَهُم فيها الصَهيلُ

    You see the lovers among a people's domed tents;

    there, neighing answers their groans.

There, bodies and tall lances sway,

and front teeth and blades smile.

And how many a long-cherished hope within their guarded lands

has a long, supple spear brandished to bar its way!

And a beloved youth has eyelids

that teach how minds are stolen away.

The lion fears his brow, yet he captivates

a chaste woman with his handsome looks.

His beauty is wondrous; his own charms adore him—

can even beauty love, or feel desire?

I think his sash babbles in madness,

and the anklets do not know what it says.

    فَأوقِنُ أَنَّها ظِلٌّ يَزولُ

    Beauty's pledges do not last for long;

so I am certain they are a vanishing shadow.

And my body in love is a ruin—how, then,

can a weathered ruin answer a reproacher?

If only sickness would last, so I might last—but

my body affords sickness little enjoyment.

The heart and solace are like a mind

over which an impossible thought hovers.

O Musa, a lover thirsts and stands in the sun,

while you are the water and the sheltering shade.

Answer his caller—or the herald of his death: either

a soul's burning thirst will die, or an ailing man.

    أَتَمنَعُني أَقولُ أَنا الذَليلُ

    I am the lowly slave, and this is no boast;

will you forbid me to say, 'I am the lowly one'?

When I call my helpers for what ails me,

    beautiful patience disowns me.
